Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 07, 2022 8:19 am I got a letter related to my land in a Remote NSW. Somehow the backside of my lot owner found my address and sent a mail stating they prefer a specified color fencing and it would cost $3600, share your thoughts etc. my situation is I may end up to sell the land in an year or build after an year depends on my finance situation at that time. What are all my options to handle this neighbour? am I supposed to accept only the fence cost for backside(half price ?) and this amount seems expensive. I am new to this so please share some insights. Re: Fence sharing with neighbour 2Jul 07, 2022 9:38 am you are only obligated to pay for half of a fence that is considered sufficient. I'm unsure what that would be in a rural setting, but in an estate it would be whatever the estate guidelines stipulate - eg a wood paling fence or a colourbond fence in a specific colour minimum 1.8m High. anything over and above that can be agreed on by negotiations, but you're only obligated to pay for half the standard and your neigbour to pay for any "extra" embellishments, functionality or material difference. For this youd need to get some quotes for half a standard fence to be able to base your half of of. As to how they got your address, the council provides this for contact between neighbors for the purpose of building a fence. Its normal. At this point i would suggest having a chat with your neighbor, I'm sure they left contact details, and work it out. You will be liable to pay for half of something. If you choose to ignore the contact, they can just apply for a fencing order from the court and you'll end up with an invoice for half of whatever they put up. So best to have a chat. If they provide the complete quote, how do I divide the amount as I am just behind their house and other two big shares should be covered by their adjacent neighbours ? If they havent done tha you can either work it out yourself or ask them to issue you a propper notices with the calculation of your proportion showing the workings.
