Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 06, 2022 10:21 pm My husband and I bought a 2acre block in Central Queensland in Dec 2020. We signed a build contract with a Building company and the slab was laid in June 2021. We have had the completion date pushed back twice and have now been told as of yesterday, 5/5/2022 that they are battling to find bricklayers and so have to extend our "approximate" completion date to 24 August... 42 days later. Now my issue or query is the following... how often can they continue to push the date further back until they start compensating us? And if bricklaying is the issue can we request cladding for eg. As an alternate option? My issue too is that in the vicinity of the suburb I live in... the same building company has erected, within the space of 8 months, about 30 NEW homes, and yet we are still at roof and dry wall stage? We are at breaking point now where finances become an issue for our rental, land and build payments as well as being told we have to push back our shed and solar instalation due to them not being finished. I would love some advice before we meet the owner in the next few days of the building company. Thank you Re: Need some advice please 2May 11, 2022 3:39 pm Rising building costs are sending builders to the wall. Some larger ones have had to cancel contracts and hand back the deposit. Some smaller ones go bankrupt. Bricklayers are in high demand, it's hard to find brickies who will work for the old rate, so builders are delaying jobs hoping the rates come down. It can be a precarious position. Remember, there are two bad payers - those who pay too early and those who pay too late. Re: Need some advice please 3May 12, 2022 9:10 am Generally under normal trading conditions builders are required to honour price and time for construction. But thanks to our corrupt politicians our economy has been destroyed and now we have anything but normal trading conditions. Builders are not your insurance of cost and time of construction under abnormal conditions. If you are lucky you will get your job finished late If you are lucky you will get your job finished even if you have to pay for increased cost of labour and material If you are unlucky your builder will be broke, your job won't be finished and when eventually it is it will be nearly twice the cost and three times time Even if you have to pay more to your builder to have your house finished, it will be reflected in the increased value of your home so you don't lose, if you don't builder will be broke, you lose.
