Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 21, 2008 10:21 am I am doing my head in trying to modify the house plans. I have decided on a plan but I'm just playing. I've realised that the core issue is..... cupboards. Surprise, surprise I hear you laugh!
I have a storage disorder..... All the fiddling I'm doing is primarily to create more cupboards... I'm talking moving the whole side of the house out by 600mm in order to put a wall of cupboards down the hallway. The other house that was never built had three built in linen presses and a walk-in linen storage. I think I'm disappointed with anything less... am I just being nuts and irrational? I've pulled out two cupboards to create a walk in pantry... which leaves me with one single door cupboard!!!! I've pushed the laundry (and therefor the whole back of the house) out by 600mm to make a wall of cupboards in the laundry. There is of course robes in each bedroom, but is this enough? In effect four cupboards for 35sq? Are my expectations of cupboards unrealistic? I'm willing to sacrifice anything for more cupboards..... but there's no where to put them without really changing the house.... How many cupboards does everyone have? And more importantly is it enough? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 2Oct 21, 2008 10:39 am hey jo!
We've only got 1 cupboard (in the laundry) and to be honest, I wish I had thought of this earlier and made some space somewhere else in the house...(i don't know how/where though!) Having said that, its only fiance and I, and we have 3 spare bedroon cupaboards (atm! hehe) and a garage...and i suppose we'll put up a shed if need be.. Maybe you are stressing out about ur cupboard space cos u have a lot of stuff atm? but maybe when it comes time to move out and into your new home, you will throw out a lot of stuff that u have now, but don't really need? does that make sense? Maybe you just need to be ruthless with the stuff that you currently have in storage, and then you will find you don't need all that storage space? Duno if that helped much.... Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 3Oct 21, 2008 10:53 am You can never have too many cupboards. We will have two double linen cupboards in our new house (almost 42 sq's) - one upstairs and one downstairs plus the storage under the stairs which I think will house the shoes, school bags and winter coats etc.
I'm thinking of keeping all the linen etc in the upstairs cupboard and using the downstairs one for board games craft etc for the kids. We have a huge laundry and I really don't know why I didn't get a price to have two more doubles put in there. Four would be fantastic. I have about oh.....100 rolls of wrapping here......I'd be able to fill them. If you can push the house out and have a wall do it. You will find things to store in there I think you are better off with too many than not enough. As for that single cupboard in the kitchen........that would annoy me! Happy at Home Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 4Oct 21, 2008 10:54 am Oh I know you're right Newbies... but I don't have much stuff..... but where will the vacuum cleaner go? And the brooms? All of DS's games and board games? All the linen? Luggage? Boxes (I keep boxes so things can be repacked if need be stop laughing Newbies!!! ).... where will it all live? Where?
I may actually be losing my mind..... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 5Oct 21, 2008 10:59 am Jo, I just brought up your plan (it's a lovely looking home btw). From what I can see there are two singles.....one opposite the bathroom and one in the study/retreat. Is that right?
EDIT - no just found another one near the toilet - so that is three. Can you take a bit out of the master WIR and have a double opposite the garage internal door? Happy at Home Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 6Oct 21, 2008 11:01 am joles Oh I know you're right Newbies... but I don't have much stuff..... but where will the vacuum cleaner go? I may actually be losing my mind..... hahahahahahahahahah fiance does the same thing! i once found an empty box that use to house blank cd's...it was like a tiny *** box!?! hehehehehehe maybe jo, u could fold up the boxes and stack them neatly/flatly somwhere, that way it wouldnt take up too much space, but u could still keep them? hehehehe don't worry jo, u can tell me my own advise when it comes to cleaning out my closet!!!! al my beautiful clothes!?!? hehe Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 7Oct 21, 2008 11:01 am But House To Be is also right.... the shoes, the coats, where will they live?....
In my rental at the moment... double linen press and understair storage... and there is sh*t everywhere ... I have a tanty at least once a day because I can't find things..... There's just no easy and nice way to add cupboards into this plan... it's just going to look crap..... I may have to change houses simply over this issue... storage is actually that important to me. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 9Oct 21, 2008 11:11 am one near the toilet for DS's games etc and the wall of c/b in the laundry for everything else?
Is the master WIR an option? WIP is a great idea. Happy at Home Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 10Oct 21, 2008 11:13 am Toni, I though about stealing space of the master robe.... but I don't want anything in the entry way. The garage wall is a feature cantilevered wall, I don't want to lose that and the bedroom side, the bedroom doors sit in a bit and it looks really nice and want to keep the walls either side smooth if I can.. does that make sense? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 11Oct 21, 2008 11:14 am can you put in a nib wall at the end of the kitchen where that little island bench is and put a double linen on the entry side of that? That would mean that you don't see the kitchen from your front door and walk into the casual living area via the living room? Happy at Home Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 12Oct 21, 2008 11:16 am yep makes sense but I have no idea what a cantilevered wall is
With the nib at the end of the kitchen you could have the push opening doors so you won't have handles sticking out. Happy at Home Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 13Oct 21, 2008 11:21 am House-To-Be can you put in a nib wall at the end of the kitchen where that little island bench is and put a double linen on the entry side of that? That would mean that you don't see the kitchen from your front door and walk into the casual living area via the living room? I thought of that... but that little extra kitchen bit will actually be a bar and we want it to be easily accessible from the living and theatre....... you actually can't see the kitchen from the front door. The wall on it's own, near the lounge blocks it and will have a wood burning heater in it... (that wall looks weird on the plan but works really well in reality. ) The lounge will actually be an open study/retreat so it will have bookshelves and stuff.. so those walls are out! See my dilemma? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 14Oct 21, 2008 11:22 am The cantilevered wall... it's like a floating wall.... part of it doesn't reach the floor and goes in a bit... (maybe cantilevered isn't the right word... )... hard to explain... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 15Oct 21, 2008 11:25 am yes I do.......where is this house on display? Tarneit ? We need to do a walk through with the plan.
Fireplace sounds lovely and looks nice in the photos. I love the kitchen area. I can see it as a bar or a coffee area (not that I drink Coffee!) My kids would use it to play in. Saw a cantilevered wall thanks for google images.....I'd be lost without that site Very nice. I think you are better off going back to the house with the plan rather than sitting at home with it.
