Browse Forums General Discussion Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 21Oct 21, 2008 12:30 pm This is interesting, I went to the same displays 9 times at least ...
The SC who is at the display remember me already even i did not sign up with him (i signed up with another SC) Every time i went there, i spent at least 40mins walking through the whole house and backyard. At one time i was there for nearly 2 hours, and the SC thought that he lost me somewhere and started looking for me... I bought my coffee with me, all the plans, pictures from other displays, and a measure tape.. and i have made most of my decision in the display, rather than in my current house using my imigination.. Not sure if this work for you Joles, but may be worth to try Blog - http://clageonewhouse.blogspot.com/ Building Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10886&hilit=milan I am in, with my husband and my beautiful bunny Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 22Oct 21, 2008 3:01 pm I think I'm getting somewhere..... this is the original, and then what I've done cupboard wise....
I've made bed 3 and 4 wardrobes bigger, I've made a walk in pantry in the kitchen, pushed the laundry out 600mm (and rearranged it) to create a wall of cupboards, pushed the study/retreat out 600mm to create two cupboards and a computer nook in the middle with overhead cupboards. This obviously isn't the only way to do it.... but it's probably a good way without the costs getting out of control. Enough cupboards? Or not enough? Opinions welcome. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 23Oct 21, 2008 3:08 pm I know you said you wanted more storage - but ever thought about why you need all that storage?
I was a terrible hoarder - before we moved - I gave away heaps of things that I never used - my plan for the new place: 2 sets of linen per person only 2 sets of towels per person 8 teatowels 4 handtowels for guest bathrooms My storage at our new place is more for stockpiling - 3 months worth of dried/tinned food & supplies for emergencies. After 4 years - we're in! Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 24Oct 22, 2008 8:38 pm Have you thought about putting overhead cupboards along the walls in the garage?
regards sean Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 25Oct 22, 2008 8:52 pm I've only just seen this Jo... your new plan looks good Good idea of sdabel's to have some in the garage.
We have ONE (1) double linen press in the whole house there is one in the laundry too but will be more of a broom cupboard... I figure between them, our huge WIR, WIP and 3 x BIRs in bedrooms we'll be ok! The annoying thing with mine is, the doors are only standard height, but our ceilings are 3m, so we have HEAPS of extra, unusable space up above where the doors end Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 26Oct 22, 2008 8:56 pm Yep that's where bigger dorrs are good. we gat bigger doors as standard on the new house. So many things are standard!
sdabel, we'll definitely have storage in the garage. I want to do that system where it all sits off the floor so it can still be hosed out if need be.... but I guess it's pricey! But I don't want to go in the cold garage to get things... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 29Oct 22, 2008 9:31 pm Jo you were on your way to seeing how much storage you need simply by outlining what you need it for.
One thing that could help you out is a tall slim cupboard that runs up between the 2 sinks in the ensuite. This would then double as a linen for that room only. You can keep the towels and bedlinen for that room in that room. Or you could put it in the WIR. Now do a list of what things you need to house, Linen christmas tree vacuum mops/ brooms games books coats shoes. You also need to consider if there are going to be chests of drawers in any of the bedrooms or bookcases anywhere. You have big double robes in the rooms and storage in the rumpus. You have your garage storage for all the non essentials.Kitchen cupboards that could house a restaurant. You could do overheads in the laundry and you have a floor to ceiling next to the laundry sink. Oh my goodness ........Joles there is already lots of cupboards I have named this storage disorder you have. OSD...............Obsessive storage disorder. Stonecutter - what emergencies are you stockpiling for? I wondered that too.... nuclear winter? Not quite! there are a few reasons: 1. Our area will most likely be prone to blackouts - Blacktown local council area - usually 2-3 severe blackouts per year where there is no power for 1-2 days - so tinned/dried food is handy (we'll also be getting a generator to run the fridge/freezer - and we can use it when we go bush camping) 2. Often have a lot of unexpected guests - this way I can cook up a storm for 15 people (my immediate family) without needing to go out to the shops 3. Something happens and I or DH get injured and don't have time to get out to the shops - stockpile is ready to go 4. I buy lots of things in bulk from wholesalers to save $$$ For me - it's a personal thing - I'm not a doom-&-gloom type - I just like to be prepared! (Yes I am a bit nuts as well!) Terrence Malick Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 33Oct 23, 2008 8:13 am I've got your solution!!
Make the hall way that goes down past the laundry, bathroom and study wider and put a row of cupboards along the back of the kitchen. I have seen this done in LP Warren homes - very good idea and you get a whole wall of cupboards!! Not to mention the added space you will pick up in the theater and bedrooms on that side. Paula Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 34Oct 23, 2008 8:17 am Yes that was my earlier solution...... when I was talking about moving the whole side of the house out 600mm..... but by moving the laundry up 600mm and the study out 600mm I've created the same amount of cupboards, for a lot less money.
And the cupboards in the study will be very usable. I think I'm happy now! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Oh Newbies, you never fail to bring a smile to my face Jo, I think your plan looks fantastic. I honestly think you'll have enough cupboard space with whats on the plan and then the robes in the bedrooms too. I love the fireplace thing and how it sits in front of the HT opening. Go forth and get this rolling Just wondering if you are sticking with the same colour scheme that you were having in the Grandview? Happy at Home Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 36Oct 23, 2008 8:30 am Who will have Bed 2? If was going to be the spare room you could put a cupboard facing the family room where the existing robe is and create anotehr robe on the other side of it. The door would face the robe but that's quite common.
The retreat cupboards are great. Re: How many cupboards... is enough? 37Oct 23, 2008 8:32 am PS. To put doors in just take the square selector, draw around an existing door, copy and paste and then while the new door is still highlighted drag it where you want it to go. I think that sounds great, you could always put his robe into the laundry storage space if storage near the family would be more convenient, but I think it's great as it is and that you have lots of storage.
