Then at a later date you can either replace it with the charger (hardwired) or have a 3 phase plug installed on the inlet of your charger and plug that into the 3 phase wall outlet. It would be nearer hardwired but using a 3 phase outlet would give you the option to change chargers without having to get a sparky in each time. You can plug and play. Thanks for your reply. 3 phase output is called AC isolator? A 3 phase outlet is the 3 phase version of a powerpoint. Available as 415v 10 or 20 amp. You can just get one installed in the garage where you are thinking of putting the charger. Technically you can put the matching plug on any sort of charger and then plug that into the outlet. Re: Tesla or other EV charging point provision in garage 13Mar 19, 2022 4:53 pm Pulse chars0974 Pulse As the others said can run conduit or just run cable to a junction box. Good to read the specs for the charger per phase so the sparky knows what to run. I think I went for 6mm2 orange circular three phase. That should be OK to about 25A. Different cars have different locations too. Tesla is back left. You might want to run to two locations in the garage. Also run spare conduit for comms cables between charger and switchboard . Some smart car chargers measure the total household current usage and only charge if your solar system is in surplus and feeding back to the grid. It also pays to cable to a potential battery location while you are at it. really helpful indeed. Just check Tesla wall connector allows 32A per phase maximum, will my 3 phase -63A per phase too big to cause overload? No the 63A will be the service fuse or maximum you can draw. A good sparky will do a maximum demand calculation using AS3000, for the whole installation. See this handy calculator: https://www.jcalc.net/maximum-demand-calculator-as3000 Car chargers are 100%, so the 32A per phase means you have 31A left per phase for everything else. You probably will set the charger to use a lower setting as you generally charge overnight using off peak or excess solar during the day. Either way there is no benefit in rapid charging. Look at the car you want, the charging times and then work out how fast you want to charge and therefore what size cable is needed. The 3 phase outlet is a good idea too. much appreciate! Re: Tesla or other EV charging point provision in garage 14Mar 22, 2022 12:31 pm If your meter box is on an external wall to the garage, I wouldn't stress about getting an outlet yet. You can fit one relatively easy at a later date. Just get the 3 phase to your house. So i have to make a provision for future EV charging. Re: Tesla or other EV charging point provision in garage 16Mar 22, 2022 3:51 pm Hey chars. Definitely get a 3 phase 5 pin socket put on middle of garage wall as chippy suggests above. You can then connect wall chargers and remove later if required. We actually got one put on both walls for future 2 x EV household during our build, and wouldn't you know it my wife has bought an EV too. EV batteries are only going to get bigger so power needs in the garage will only increase. 3 phase is the way to go. Sometimes you will want to fast charge and single phase wont do it.
