Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 05, 2022 1:28 pm We have a long wall facing west. The rooms on this side get quite warm - one is the garage but one is a bedroom. The bedroom has an air/con - separate to the main system. I have this idea to put a long narrow "fly-over" along that side - maybe 20 metres by 2 metres. BUT the costs quoted are astronomical. Plants/trees aren't an option. We have tinted the windows. Any ideas ? Re: House - Sun Protector - West Side Wall 2Feb 05, 2022 4:45 pm you need to shade the walls from the side, a flyover won’t stop late afternoon sun. you can put shade cloth between the fascia and the side fence or plants in pots? or awning blinds for windows Re: House - Sun Protector - West Side Wall 3Feb 05, 2022 5:01 pm Fly over would stop the main heat of the day tho. Re: House - Sun Protector - West Side Wall 4Feb 06, 2022 9:53 am first "test drive" a piece of maximum shade cloth suspended to cover the window from the outside of the eaves to the ground (ie leaving a deep gap between the cloth and the wall/windows) to find out how wide the shade needs to be to improve the temperature inside ... hooks screwed into the eaves and split rings can be used to suspend the piece of shade cloth and the bottom can be secured by inserting a length of plastic pipe inside a hem to weigh down the fabric....this method can be used to test the value of more expensive external shutters to just shade the window although we've used the homemade screen to shade 10 metres of verandah and it's see through, inexpensive, easy DIY and effective to keep the sun off the wall, floor and windows and can be removed and stored if/when not needed.. shade cloth is easy to sew on a domestic sewing machine and temporary hems can be controlled with safety pins but no need to join giant pieces as separate panels can be made using multiple widths of available shade cloth that's sold at most Hardware stores and is similar to the products used in the custom made sails Re: House - Sun Protector - West Side Wall 5Feb 06, 2022 10:21 am Might be a go - and certainly cheaper than fly over.
