Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 19, 2008 5:17 pm I am building a free standing open pergola wherein I decided to use merbau timbers instead of treated pine or oregon as suggested from someone when I posted the question before. However, I got a problem in looking for the post (150mmx150mm), the beams all no worries. My problem is I cannot find solid 150mmx150mm instead the available as received from all qoutes submmitted were all laminated one. Is the laminated one will have no problem in the future or I meant the glue bonding will last longer under expose with sun and rain? Or does anyone know where can I buy solid merbau post within Melbourne? Or any alternative close or similar to merbau ?
Anyway if the above question totally difficult to sort out..........it came across to my mind 3x pieces of 150mmx50mm bond together with toughest glue and and secure as will with long bolts in various section of the 3 meters length. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure of this idea if it will work or if applicable to my needs. Could anyone can help me, please......???????????? Thanks, PROCELO Re: Merbau Post 2Oct 19, 2008 6:57 pm I know this company have solid merbau posts that are 120 x 120mm
and they have 2 locations in melbourne at Campbellfield and Deer Park. http://www.merbauaustralia.com.au/index.html Dont try laminating 50mm pieces together. Re: Merbau Post 5Oct 19, 2008 8:52 pm ![]() Why is it that it WON"T WORK..........can you have a brief explanation please..... TY Its not that it wont work but he said he could get laminated posts so why bother trying to laminate them yourself. Re: Merbau Post 6Oct 19, 2008 9:07 pm ![]() Thanks for the website.....however my foundation footings are already intended for 150mmx150mm. Any website you can suggest...thanks Do you want the posts dressed? 150 x 150 is a sawn size - the finish size if dressed would be around 140mmx140mm. I could supply them no worries but its a 9 hour drive ![]() Expect to pay big $ for them ![]() Re: Merbau Post 10Oct 20, 2008 12:28 pm We have solid one piece oregom posts on the front of our house.
They split , twist, warp and weep gum Out the back on our pergola built more recently, we hane laminated, treated pine post...still as good as the day they where installed Laminated posts are more stable by a long shot Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Merbau Post 11Oct 20, 2008 3:15 pm ![]() Thanks for the website.....however my foundation footings are already intended for 150mmx150mm. Pat Re: Merbau Post 12Oct 20, 2008 6:04 pm ![]() Thanks Luke............but I don't think it's worth to pay extra especially it's in Sydney. Anyway, I am hoping I can find it in Melbourne if not maybe go for Oregon instead. Your not allowed to use oregon outdoors in a structual application. Any outdoor structual timber must be durability 1 or 2, otherwise pressure preservative treated - oregon is a durability 4 timber Re: Merbau Post 13Oct 21, 2008 3:41 pm ![]() ![]() Thanks Luke............but I don't think it's worth to pay extra especially it's in Sydney. Merbau is not cheap and yes it has been logged too much in southeast Asia and surrounds but Australia doesn't import anywhere near the amount that the Asian countries do. China are the biggest importers of merbau and thousands of tons were used for the Olympics and other industries and that has threatened the existence of this tree. They cut it down but they don't replant and that's not good for the future of merbau timber. Its such a great wood, it is termite resistant, very durable and it looks great but they really need to regrow to keep this species widely available. Re: Merbau Post 18Oct 22, 2008 4:38 pm Hi All,
Since I had difficulty in procuring the solid Merbau 150mmx150mm post in Melbourne although I can find laminated but just don't like for some reason.........Does anyone know if Forest Red Gum is okay to use as an alternative to Merbau in the same application? All the Bunnings stores I've been in are full of meranti - we keep oodles of it at work as well, as does any timber yard. The BCA I mentioned doesn't apply to meranti as its not a structually graded timber. The majority of solid doors are meranti as well as jambs/skirting/ architrave/ mouldings etc. If there have been changes, variations, during construction then the drawings should be revised, the building permit amended and the current, as built drawings given to… 2 22657 ![]() That just protects from further rust, l want first to apply a rust converter or rust killer to kill the rust thats there, whats the best one for galvanized steel 2 19559 I am Reading it.
