Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 17, 2008 8:26 pm Hello,
I want to attach a pergola to the side of my lowset brick & tile home. The pergola (approx 10m x 5.5m ) will be located in an internal corner of an exterior wall. To maximise headheight under the pergola and still maintain a reasonable fall on the pergola roof, I want to do it the following way: -Remove the guttering, fascia, surfeit and a couple of rows of rooftiles. -Cut the trusses back approximately flush with the top plate. -Fit lintels above window & door apertures and brick up to the height of the top plate. -Refit fascia & guttering. The idea here is that I can then site the pergola roof just below the new gutter height. This should give me enough height to frame & sheet the underside of the pergola roof to conceal wiring and allow me to fit recessed lighting. This 'operation' would have to be performed on both of the walls that adjoin the pergola, and would also require some reworking of the ridge cap at the outer ends of the house roof. Can anyone see any structural or other issues with doing it this way? Regards, Rod Re: House mods to fit a new pergola 2Oct 19, 2008 7:26 pm Interesting idea. By the work you describe, you'll bassically be removing the eave to lift the height?
I think structually, it's fine. Much better than hanging the pergola off the end of the eave which is 600mm past the wall. Fair bit of work involved though. Are you planning on boxing in this area as a living area? Have you considered using the roof brackets in the link below. http://www.roofextenda.com.au/roof-extenda-bracket.html These too sit above the wall plate, i've used them at my place and I'm quite happy with them.
