Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 10, 2021 7:34 am Hi All, Hoping someone can help me. We have a house that has a Moroka render finish on the exterior. It's about 15 years old, and we've noticed on the side that gets battered by the rain and wind, it's peeling in sections. We've had 3 trades come and look at it, and they've all said it looks as though it wasn't applied properly when it was done, as Moroka doesn't tend to peel off this easily. They said they would pressure clean it off and reapply. We got some big quotes, but unfortunately we're just going to DIY it as we don't have the funds to get a professional. My husband started with the pressure cleaner yesterday and got most of the flakey, peeling parts off, but just wondering if anyone knows how far you need to go with removing the render. Does it need to be a completely clean finish to re-apply the moroka over the top. Or is it ok if it's just most of the unstable parts of it? Photo of what we're working with part way through the removal. We're only doing one side as the rest are fine. If Marine or coastal how's the cavity, waterproof flashings and roof holding up? Painters love painted rendered finishes along the coast, every 10 years house owners need to find an extra 50K.. I guess you could say we are coastal. 3.25km to our closest beach. We're up higher than most of the houses in our area, so do get more battered by rain and wind. The other sides of our house, the Moroka is perfectly fine (except on some 2 areas that are right next to grass, the Moroka is coming away from the bottom, but only up 2 brick rocks. I think this is because the previous owners planted mondo grass, and roses along the bottom near the houses, and have watered them all the time? We don't water those plants anymore though and plan to remove those. As for the house, everything else is fine with it, and everything else has held up well. It's just this one side of the property that there are cosmetic issues. Re: Moroka Render peeling 4Oct 10, 2021 9:11 am Your distance shouldn't be a problem as you're outside the critical zone distances ? It sounds like moisture is coming from within the cavity and the moisture has to egress somewhere, does the brickwork have weep holes, you'll need to get someone to inspect it. We've have a few trades look at it already and they all think that it's because it wasn't applied properly. Apparently it was common with these types of display home builders rushing jobs.
