Anywhere with cool to cold winters (including Adelaide) I think it's crazy to cover north facing living areas. I've lived houses with no winter sun and one with an exposed northern faced. The exposed north house was FAR nicer to live in despite being very simple. It was a weird house that had a long north aspect facing the street (living areas facing this way). The undercover areas were to the south. I would have a retractable roof even if it's more expensive. Where is the block? North of Sydney it probably doesn't matter much unless you're worried about blocking natural light as well.
