Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 05, 2021 6:04 pm Hi all, I am new to the forum and would appreciate some advice from the wise folks here. I have recently moved into a house [built 2008] and constantly hear popping and cracking noises coming from the roof cavity. These noises occur at all times of the day and night and I generally hear them 3-4 times per hour. Wind, rain, sunshine I hear it regardless and these noises seem to be localised to one part of the house. I did patch up cracks in the walls before moving in, but within a couple of weeks they have appeared again. Cracks generally run along the wall and ceiling joint. I have done a bit of research online and it seems that a number of things could be the cause; - Thermal expansion and contraction of the roof members - Uplift of the entire truss from wind loads - (noises can be heard on calm sunny days too) - Settlement of the foundation (I'm in Perth and it looks like sandy soil with a small fraction of clay) Could anything else be the culprit? And what generally is the remedy in this sort of situation, if any? It's a stick pitched roof and not a truss roof 3. Cracking patterns and limited info do not indicate foundation issues Check the engineering Drawings for wind loading class, the strutting looks a bit light on ? Also check member deflections as there's a lot of weight in a tile roof, horizontal shear, etc,etc Cheers Chris Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Cracking and Popping Noises from the roof 3Sep 19, 2021 12:40 am I don't mean to hijack Baxtermein's post, but I'm having a similar issue and it's driving my nuts. The roof does have popping noises in the day throughout the house. My main issue is the popping/clunking noise that occurs late at night when I'm trying to sleep and where it's concentrated above the master suite. It doesn't appear to be linked to the weather - seems to happen rain/no rain/windy/still. I have had a building inspector come out and he found one roof strap missing above the master room and some of the screws he deemed to be too tight. The builder's maintenance guy has been out and rectified the roof straps and replaced some of the neo-washers (those that could be reached via ladder without getting on the roof). The clunking noise continues though. Roof is Colorbond, shale grey, went up August 2020 thereabouts. I think I have stick frame, but not really sure on that? I've attached some photos of the roof when it was in progress and a recording of the noise (if it works): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Cracking and Popping Noises from the roof 4Sep 19, 2021 6:12 am Oasiso, that is because steel expands in the heat just over twice as much as the wood in the trusses do. Wood and clay tiles expand about the same, and importantly, lesser in general, so you don't have that happening with this combination. I currently live in a timber and clay tiles roofed house, and previously lived in a timber /colourbond house that made the noises. Honestly, I didn't mind it, and mostly I didn't notice the noises except for hail or extreme temperature changes. In this way the 'popping' (actually more a slide-stop, slide-stop noise) informed me about the weather outside, so all up I didn't care. When I moved to the tile roof house, I missed the noises that used to indicate the weather conditions outside. I’ve lived in tin roof houses for years and haven’t had this issue, including recently built properties. Expanding and contracting from the temperature, sure, but why in one section of the house only at night and the rest is silent? Re: Cracking and Popping Noises from the roof 6Mar 18, 2022 4:26 pm Oasiso sounds like we have very similar issues. Late last year had my tiles roof replaced for colorbond and it has been the worst decision of my life. During the day the bangs are like rockets going off, and during the night it’s pops and cracks 3am 6am doesn’t matter, it’s literally all day and all night. Can’t sleep. Builder wants nothing to do with it, won’t return my calls and takes months to reply to my follow up emails. Steve Oh and ps, my previous house I replaced the roof for colorbond as well, and not one single issue, so I won’t accept anyone telling me this sh!t is normal. Ain't that the truth! We used to have a tile roof and had it replaced with colorbond and suddenly everything throughout the entire house sounds louder! 4 6681 Hi, I have a steel frame house which was built 2 years ago. When you are down stairs you can hear clunking noises when someone is walking around. We were told if you… 0 4450 1 6625 |
