Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 06, 2021 12:28 pm Hi, I need to build a structure attached to pillars on my shed. It will be an underneath-roof rack to store timber. I need to understand how to dimension a C-section beam. I found a website that calculates deflection and stress levels. Ended up with this C purlin of section size 200-24. With this 1ton load in the center it deflects 92mm and with max stress of 360MPa. The C-purlin is rated at 450Mpa yield stress, so it feels sufficient. Am I in the right path or am I over/under-dimensioning it? I know all answers will have the caveat that I need an expert to provide expert advice. This is a theoretical example and all advice I get will be consulted with an expert before deciding at its due time. Thanks very much in advance. Re: Choosing the right C-beam 3Sep 07, 2021 8:55 am Thanks for answering. It's supported on the pillars of the shed (strong). Attached a diagram. It's actually meant to support around 4 tons of distributed load. Beam 1 (B1) is the one where the majority of the weight is supported (B2 rests in B1). I basically need to understand what sort of C-beams do I need to buy for B1, B2 and the 5 perpendiculars B3 to B7.
