Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 08, 2021 1:38 pm Hi guys, My builder has been delaying bricklayering because they said lack of trade people at the moment. They are procedding with internal wall plastering (gyprocks, etc). My concern was that humidity will detoriate the build quality. But they said they are wrapping teh house with a plastic lining and the house is now water tight (which I doubt, there are wholes here and there in the lining where they had to put pipes and electricals) and humidity would not be an issue. They are finishing the plaster and proceeding to wet area sealing. My question is, is that a usual process if brick layer is being delayed? Should I be concern about long term quality of the build? Thanks, M Re: Plastering before bricklayer 2Jul 08, 2021 3:13 pm If membrane is breathing (allowing water vapour out and but not allowing water in), then you should not be worrying much about the humidity even if some droplets get inside. Keep in mind that your bricks are not designed and not supposed to prevent humidity ingress too, they carry pure decoration purpose plus provide some degree of mechanical damage protection (although, not good enough to protect against the sharp debris from the strong hurricane, for example). But it is a good practice to seal all the penetrations in the building membrane. If they are plastering, I would assume they have already completed electrical and plumbing and installed insulation. Also, the roof is already in place, too? They will still be putting in ties when doing the brickwork, so the membrane will be punctured in multiple places, need to make sure those penetrations are also properly sealed. A bit of a fuss, but needs to be done. Thanks, M mhasan I am with Alex on this one. Provided that they tape all the membrane joins and penetrations you will be fine. Brick veneer is only a cladding skin and the cavity is designed to take water, so I think what your builder is doing is smart to keep the process going.
