Q1: Do I need to remove the counter top? Q2: How much would it cost to have someone come in and do it? Q3: Can I get installation that does the whole lot ? Cut, plum and sparkie hook up? Q1: depends on the width of the drawer space you are trying to convert, and how the panels are screwed together to make the cabinet. Q2: no idea. Q3: unlikely to find anyone with all three qualifications, but some tradies will take on the job of co-ordinating other trades and providing you a single bill. PS: looks like the plumbing is already there. Re: Dishwasher space 3May 09, 2021 11:10 pm Thanks arcadelt for your reply! Much appreciated In answer to your Q1 - the cut will need to be the width of a dishwasher 600mm plus leeway for plumbing and sparkie hook up, so my guess is at least 630mm. Each space, the draw to the left and the cupboard space to the right is approx 450mm each, so the middle laminate panel will need to come out as well as the panels at the bottom, (the one that goes to the floor and the one that goes to the back). Plus I'll need to remove the top lip at 630mm. Understanding that these may be load bearing I'm inclined to leave the left laminate panel in, but will have to install another panel to the right at 630mm. Once the hole is cut. FYI the counter top is laminated MDF - not marble or stone. Not sure if this is handy info or not. Thanks for your help. Re: Dishwasher space 5May 10, 2021 3:37 pm Thanks for your help and interest arcadelt. I thought about a 450 but it's a tight squeeze in one of the spaces. Either either whether 450 or 600 will have to modify the space. It's not so much what I need it's more about resale, probably cost more for a 600 to make the hole , and is more work but 600s are better value and I'd get more on the resale on the house instead of a 450. Surely an install is achievable as much as it a PITA. Thanks again. Dishwasher space 6May 10, 2021 5:06 pm TrickyMickyD Surely an install is achievable as much as it a PITA. I converted a set of drawers to a dishwasher space in the past. Mine was a 450mm gap and the 450mm dishwasher fit perfectly. If you are installing a 600mm (generally 595mm wide), you don't want to make the gap much more than 600mm (605mm at most, but not 630mm as you mentioned above), but the installation instructions for the dishwasher will give you the required dimensions. If you haven’t bought that yet, you should still be able to get the instructions off the internet. You'll need to reverse install the cabinetry in that area, and you'll easily work out if you need to take off the benchtop once you start removing screws. The only issue that will arise is if they have used glue, as you'll want to be careful not to damage any of the board and laminate. Cutting is pretty easy with a jigsaw or a renovator saw, but make sure to use a fine blade to avoid chipping the edges of the laminate too much. If you pull the cabinetry out, that will be the time to get a sparky in. Can’t see everything from the picture your posted, but at least you have a power point next to the microwave that they will be able to tap into. Plumbing is easy, as you just need to tap into what I can already see under the sink. You just need a hole big enough the pass the hoses through. If you put the dishwasher on the far left (which is the only logical place unless you are going to add a filler board), you might need to buy some extension hoses as the ones that come with the dishwasher might not be long enough. Re: Dishwasher space 7May 10, 2021 5:57 pm Thanks arcadelt again for your help, some handy info there. I'll get some info on instruction manuals to get the right measure. I originally assumed I'd need extra space. For insurance purposes am I not supposed to use a plumber for the plumbing? Re: Dishwasher space 8May 10, 2021 6:15 pm Cutting a dishwasher space into existing cabinetry is one of the harder things to do, particularly if you want it neat. Arcadelt is right in saying that a DW space is 600 not 630 and they always look better in a snug hole rather than a wide opening. To be able to cut the existing carcass you will need a multi tool to cut right into corners where jigsaws and circular saws won't reach. You'll also need one to cut the kicker. You will have to remove the whole left hand side of the cabinet including the section with the drawers and most likely also cut out the back. The benchtops will have to be supported on the left hand side because there will no longer be any carcass to hold it up. I'd install a false panel on the left against the wall to get the DW off the wall and then a new full height panel on the right. It looks like you will have to cut down your existing door but they are a routered door so that will cause some issues. The other thing to consider is if the flooring (not sure if it's floorboards or timber on concrete) runs right under the cabinets. Sometimes the flooring stops just under the kicker so you will also need to do something there. I've put it up for a builder to come and do it, but wanted $600 just to cut the hole. I'm assuming you're a chippy, what would a job like this usually cost for someone to do it? Re: Dishwasher space 10May 10, 2021 7:11 pm chippy It looks like you will have to cut down your existing door but they are a routered door so that will cause some issues. I didn’t even think about the door, which is the difference between getting advice from an amateur and a professional. That would be enough for me to limit the installation to a 450mm dishwasher. Re: Dishwasher space 11May 10, 2021 8:15 pm TrickyMickyD Thanks Chippy. I've put it up for a builder to come and do it, but wanted $600 just to cut the hole. I'm assuming you're a chippy, what would a job like this usually cost for someone to do it? In all honesty, to do it properly that is probably around the right sort of price. To do it right you need to install new panels and would have to address the door issue as well. You'll get a handyman to do it cheaper but that won't necessarily be a high quality job. The best person is a cabinet maker so they can supply you with the required panels all cut to size. Thanks arcadelt. I've thought about this, and to be honest the 450s are a fair bit dearer (for why I don't know) and I'd still have to get it plumbed and sparkied in. Either either I'm looking at anywhere between $1300 - $2000 all up, but I'll get better bites on sale of the house down the track with a 600. Much appreciated for your advice and help. Thanks Chippy, As for the door (cut to size and to match) that's gonna eat a bit of coin, my guestimate is I'm looking at at least $1500 by the time of cut, plumb and sparky. May not need to do all the cabinet work with a 450mm job but they're a fair bit dearer and a 600mm is going to be a better selling point when I put the house up for resale.
