Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 12, 2008 9:01 pm I'm new to dishwashers (I grew up with one but never really used them properly myself except in hotels, and haven't had one for the last 5 years in my rental place), and I'm a bit worried mine isn't working entirely right.
A few times when I open the door after the cycle has finished, I find the powder tab thingy still intact, but sort of "fluffy" looking. Like it's been wet and tossed around, but hasn't properly broken down. The first time I used it, the tab was still in the place you put it when you first close the dishwasher to start the cycle. It hadn't moved and the door thing hadn't opened for some reason. Another time I found it under the bottom rack thing... Should I be using plain loose powder and not these tab square things? Also, I find in every single use, there is always ONE single plate that just does not seem to even get wet!! But it's always in different locations. Very, very odd. Lastly, I find it really hard to fit everything in! It's SO small! But it's still excellent having one again. NO MORE WASHING UP! (mostly) How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 2Oct 12, 2008 9:21 pm thats a hard one
Are you putting the dishes in the right spots? I know our Miele dishwasher is very particular about how you stack the dishes. Are you using the right setting? I know I'm asking lots of questions but I can't work out why you would have a half dispersed cube unless it is stacked incorrectly or ... worst of all the d/w is not working properly. Check to make sure you are using the right setting and it is draining properly. Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 4Oct 13, 2008 7:44 am If you're using tablets or powder - the little cavity it goes in should be completely dry before you put it in there.
If there is any moisture - the powder/tablet will start to expand - then it gets stuck in there and doesn't really get used in the washing process. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 6Oct 13, 2008 9:05 am Some dishwashers don't work well with the tablets. We had one that did the exact same thing as yours and didn't wash properly either. We called the manufacturer and explained it to them and they said we should be using the powder not the tablets. We changed over to powder and never had a problem again.
Try the powder and if you still have trouble call the manufacturer. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Fields Brought Established. Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 7Oct 13, 2008 11:39 am Man I always put the washing tablets in the dispenser when there is water in it. Water, milk, weetbix etc always falls in it when I am putting the dirty dishes in and the tablet comes out ok and gets dissolved.
As for the dispenser not opening, perhaps something is blocking it. We have those square plates and we cannot put them in the front rack thingy as it stops the dispenser from opening. So they go at the back. Sandra Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 9Oct 13, 2008 1:34 pm very true albi - we use Aldi Logix powder and seems to work just as good as Morning Fresh and Finish. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 10Oct 13, 2008 4:35 pm Before you wash, try spinning the arms around manually with your hand. See if they hit any dishes/cutlery that may be sticking through the racks and blocking their movement. If so, the arms are either not spinning at all, or being slowed down during each revolution and not spinning fast enough to do any damage to the muck on your dishes or the tablet.
I know that with ours, I also have to remove the arms periodically and make sure the little holes aren't blocked with foodscraps. Apparently, the filter at the bottom isn't foolproof. I actually rang the manufacturer at one stage because I thought the machine was faulty, and they recommended I clean out the holes with a toothpick or similar. Once I did this, the machine worked perfectly again for a couple of months before I had to do it again. Hope that helps. Em Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 11Oct 13, 2008 4:40 pm Hmm, it could be something blocking it...the only thing that sits in front of it when the door's closed is the cutlery thing though.
I may well be stacking it incorrectly...lol I'll try the powder. I didn't notice prices when I bought the tablets I've been using because it was the first time I bought anything like this, and I just got the cheap Coles brand. (before buying that, I'd just been using a good brand of tablet that we obtained free from a hotel) Anyway, thank you! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 13Oct 18, 2008 4:15 pm Actually, the spinny thing is almost always slightly caught on something or other. It's VERY annoying.
Our plates must be really big or something, because as soon as I put in a normal dinner plate, everything sucks. The spinny thing gets caught, nothing fits in... Maybe our dishwasher was created in gnome land, where plates are much smaller. lol Yesterday when I opened the dishwasher after its cycle had ended (which took almost 2 hours cause it got stuck halfway through and I realised finally that the dial wasn't moving on), I saw the tablet thing had only half broken up, and half of it was in its normal place on the bottom of the dishwasher and the other half was still in the little place you put it when you first put the dishwasher on. Ugh. Also, our dishwasher's water rating is a measly 1.5 stars! *ashamed* lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 14Oct 18, 2008 5:05 pm On most dishwashers the upper rack can be adjusted to two settings - so you can say put wine glasses in the top.
If it's at it's lowest setting the "spinny thing" may interfere with plates down the bottom. Check if there's a lever or catch on either side of the top rack and look for some instruction embossed on the latch like "push" or "pull" then try to pull the basket up a bit...er....gently.... Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 15Oct 18, 2008 8:58 pm Oh cool, thank you, I will do that. Gently. lol (I also find the top rack that has the place along each side to hold mugs and cups and glasses and stuff, it's too narrow! Whenever I put mugs in there, they fall off. The little top cover thing that you can put up or down is ok, but the actual "ledge" the mugs rest on is so narrow, they tilt and then fall. *sigh* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 16Oct 19, 2008 6:06 pm Nope. There's no way to move the top rack up or down at all. It's on a track thing that's attached completely to each side of the dishwasher and that can't be moved. *shrug* I guess we're meant to have smaller plates. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 17Oct 19, 2008 10:08 pm Grace, usually the track can't be moved, but there's often a setting whereby the top rack can use a different set of rollers. Depends on the brand. Our current one is a Bosch, and you can't change the rack. Just have to stack creatively.
Judie Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 18Oct 20, 2008 12:35 pm Yeah, our brand is Nobel. There’s only one single set of tracks the rack could go on. Blegh. Oh well.
I had a dream that I opened the dishwasher and none of the dishes were clean. Obviously I am concerned about this. Lol. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 19Oct 23, 2008 9:22 pm Believe it or not the powder brand makes a huge difference. Our Miele dishwasher was having issues for the last couple of weeks and giving error messages and not finishing the cycles properly nor washing properly.
I called Miele and they asked what powder we were using and when I said 'Morning Fresh' they said that was the problem. I was skeptical so got the Finish as recommended and definitely not the tablets. Needless to say the machine is working magnificently once again. I would never have guessed that the soap would make such a difference! Builders are people too.... Re: Not sure my dishwasher is working right 20Oct 24, 2008 9:43 pm Well, I bought the Coles brand powder yesterday. I'm gonna use up the tablets first, then see how the powder goes. I think it should be good though, as the past 3 cycles I've actually broken the tablet into 3 sections within the little compartment, and every dish has been lovely and clean, and there's been no more soggy tablets found on the bottom of the dishwasher either.
So I'm happy. It's still very small and a bit awkward, but I love not having to wash up anymore!! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! I had a similar issue with my fridge not too long ago. It wasn't the same model, but the symptoms were pretty much the same: the compressor would start and then stop… 3 7522 Okay sorry silly me, my wife has solves the mystery for me. It’s because the labels on the ports are all wrongly positioned by the builder hence it confuses me. 2 1373 I am installing a new Bosch SMU4HTS01A built under dushwasher. I have 2 questions.
