Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 11, 2008 7:30 pm This has always been a slightly silly fear of mine, but whenever I sleep directly under a ceiling fan that's on all night, I'm a bit nervous that it might fall off the ceiling and onto me. lol
Some fans, when on a medium/high setting, seem to look very "loose" and almost as if they could literally fly off the ceiling and hurtle towards me!! Has this, or could this, ever happen? (We put our ceiling fan on the other night for the first time, as it had been hot during the day, and it was deliciously cool. SOOOO much better than the old pedestal fan we used to have) How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! No, it won't really fall. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Has a ceiling fan ever fallen on anyone? lol 5Oct 11, 2008 8:03 pm Grace I had a second cousin that has a ceiling fan fall on him 13 years ago.
He only has sight in one eye now, and talks with a lisp, and is missing a finger. Not pretty. Only kidding It will be fine - although I still cant sleep with one on Paula Re: Has a ceiling fan ever fallen on anyone? lol 7Oct 11, 2008 8:04 pm Paula Grace I had a second cousin that has a ceiling fan fall on him 13 years ago. Some of them are really strange.... I have often wondered if she is having us on! However...... the fan is attached to a cable so I think you are pretty safe. I do sympathise with you - we have recently had a 9 pendant light fitting installed above the stairwell and I did find myself carefully skirting around the danger zone. I gave myself a good talking to though and now I just flinch slightly as I walk under. It sounds lovely. I'll take one and post it soon. It sat in a box for nearly 12 months because the first electrician we used didn't have a long enough ladder to put it up Re: Has a ceiling fan ever fallen on anyone? lol 15Oct 12, 2008 7:46 pm Heheh, no, I'm serious. All my posts are actually serious.
I'm fully aware many are odd and quite stupid, but I honestly don't know the answers to what I've asked, and some of them are quite humorous to me too. I'm not afraid to look silly obviously! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Has a ceiling fan ever fallen on anyone? lol 16Oct 12, 2008 8:09 pm Grace they have been known to fall off.
Typically it is due to poor maintance and the hook they hang onto has worn through and away it goes. They fly across the room like a helicopter - until they hit the wall then they go all and any direction due to the impact of a spinning thing hitting a wall. So your fear is valid. But I suggest a very rare thing to experience. I suggest you be more worried about being hit by a car or getting sun cancer as you walk to work or to the bus stop. Stayed in a QLD motel once and was hearing this clunking sound - ceiling fan was working it's way out of the ceiling, only held on by one rather stressed little screw. Cable or no cable, no way I was hanging around with that thing on! Re: Has a ceiling fan ever fallen on anyone? lol 19Oct 15, 2008 7:27 pm Oh my god, you see?!?! i am with you and i know what you mean Around 10 years back, we had a series of two ceiling fans falling in a span of 30 days. But that was in India. However, ceiling fans are much more in fashion there as of here and building material is much more stronger which is all concrete and steel. I am scared since then, but back there you cant miss even a single house or a room without ceiling fan. So, thats why remebering that i havent got a ceiling fan in our new house. OK, all of you can laugh at me now PS: i am serious Any electricians here please help. 1) Will the Fan need separate switch to ON/OFF/Speed eventhough it comes with Remote 2) how about… 0 1226 My home office is hot with computer equipment running virtually 18 hours a day.
