Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 10, 2008 9:26 pm Ok, so lately I've been hanging our pictures on the walls of our new apartment.
I was fine with the adhestive ones you pull down when you want to remove them. Several of our pics are now hanging on those. However, some other ones are just too heavy (about 6-7kg each), and we need nails. We had 2 types of nails - those gold picture hook nails for plaster and softer wall materials, and masonry nails for bricks and stuff. We knew that the outside of our building is cement brick or something, and the inside is very soft gyprock/plaster stuff. I managed to get about half of the pictures up using the plaster wall nails with the picture hooks. All was fine, they hammered in well. However, certain walls just DO NOT WORK. The nail will go in about 2/3 but then stop and it sounds very loud and almost like an echo when I hammer, and it just won't go in no matter what. I can also easily pull the nail out as well, with my fingers. So not good for hanging a big, 7kg picture!! We tried the masonry nail, but this didn't work either. Even worse!! The nails went in, but the problem is that the first layer of wall is soft, so most of those nails were in that layer, and only a tiny bit of the nails actually reached far enough so as to go into the brick material (which they're supposed to do), so I could also pull them out with my fingers, because they didn't "grip". Is it normal to have 2 different building materials in a wall??? How do you hang pictures!!!??? We have SO many holes in 2 walls now, where we tried to get the nails in. *cry* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Major Problems Hanging Pictures on our Walls! 2Oct 10, 2008 9:56 pm Hi Grace,
It sounds like a normal solid brick wall, with plaster on the inside. I think you might find that you need a drill and a hammer drill at that. Our house is solid brick and so when ever we need to hang anything out comes the hammer drill and the masonry drill bits, I've never tried masonry nails. Hmmmm, now I suspect you don't own a drill, so maybe you can look at hiring one...not sure if this is even possible...or you could just hang pictures on the other walls. Good luck 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Major Problems Hanging Pictures on our Walls! 3Oct 11, 2008 4:40 pm You could hire a drill and a stud finder which will assist you in finding where the timber beams / noggins are in the wall. Look for your closet hire place - I think that even Bunnings have hire departments. Quite often, plasterboard is adhered directly to an old brick wall. It is a cheaper, quicker and more effective solution as opposed to solid plastering. If you have a brick wall behind plasterboard, just use long green wall plugs, a 6.5mm masonry bit to drill the hole and i reckon 8g (gauge) screws will do the trick. There are also hooks that can used (rather than relying on the screw head) when inserting the screw into the plug. For stud/plasterboard walls, use a stud finder to locate the studs. If not, you can use 'toggle' screws; once they're tightened up, the toggle locks onto the back of the plasterboard giving you up to 15kg's to play with!
