Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 06, 2021 12:10 am I recently purchased a ~20yo property and along the side of the house the ground level was too high (above wheep holes), and there was some dampness inside. So we had someone come out to dig down and get it to the correct level under the wheep holes. When doing that, we discovered below the decorative stones there was a layer of plastic tarp and below that it was very wet. It seems the wetness goes very deep, a good 60cm+ of mud. We have no idea what the cause is at this stage, we had a plumber come out and send a camera through the stormwater pipes and its not those (he also commented it cant be sewerage pipes as it would then smell). The other potential source is the neighbouring property but they seem to have appropriate drainage. The plastic tarp would have kept moisture in so that also adds to the mystery as who knows how long its been like this. So firstly we are stuck for ideas as to what could be causing the side of the house to be so wet, any ideas? Secondly, I am super worried about all this moisture next to my slab, given this has probably been ongoing for a period of time if there was going to be slab heave or similar would it have already occurred? Re: Wet down side of house 2Mar 07, 2021 1:16 pm Heave will only occur if moisture varies greatly. If it stays damp then all should be OK. It might be ground water if you are in a natural depression or water from neighbours. If it is dry underneath the house, Iād be tempted to concrete over it , adding a surface drainage channel. Agg drain is controversial as drying it out could cause heave if the area has always been damp Hi HomeOne, I'm in the midst of landscaping a cat run down the side of my house, and the recent rains have me wondering if I need to install some sort of drainage.
