Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 29, 2019 1:58 pm Hi l have a strange problem with a creaking bathroom tile that l cannot find the cause. l was wondering if you have any ideas My bathroom floor has ceramic tiles 40 square cm's each and plywood subfloor l have a normal square fibreglass shower tray base . There are three tiles bordering the outside of the tray base, recently l noticed after having a hot shower when l step on one of these tiles bordering the shower base in front of the shower it makes a crack or creaking noise . Then if l leave the tile alone for half an hour and step on it it no longer makes the crack or creaking noise. But if l were to then run the hot water on the shower the tile will start creaking again if l step on it. This doesn't happen if l run cold water only hot for a few miniutes and it has nothing to do with transferring my weight from the shower base to tile because it still happens if l stand outside he shower and turn the hot water on . ALso there is not visable cracks to the tile or grout. l was wondering if you have any idea why running the hot water on my shower could cause one of the tiles bordering the outside of the shower base to creak temporarily when l step on it? my theory is the hot water heating up the shower tray causes the wooden subfloor underneath to exapand and contract, is that is the case any ideas how to solve the problem Re: creaking bathroom tile 2Feb 19, 2021 5:40 am Hi jimbo73 I have exactly the same problem, you couldn,t describe it better,my 2 upstairs bathrooms were put in two months ago and i,m afraid if this problem gets worse i,ll have to take up the floor.Did you find out what the problem was,or any advice Re: creaking bathroom tile 3Feb 19, 2021 7:10 pm There could be 2 things here with the creaking, first that the shower base expands and is pressing against the edge of the tile and the 2 surfaces are rubbing together. When they tiled they have have butted the tile too close to tray and not left room for expansion. Second is more serious which sounds as if the screed has started to pop away from sub floor. The best way to check this is if the tile area sounds hollow, just get a 20 cent coin and lightly tap the tiles in various locations and if it sounds hollow or a echo type sound than the screed has popped Ain't that the truth! We used to have a tile roof and had it replaced with colorbond and suddenly everything throughout the entire house sounds louder! 4 6692 Possibly both depending on the sizing. Idea of working from the centre is that you dont have a 20mm thin tile at one end and a 400mm at the other end.
