Is your pergola a haven or a hazard...
Timber framed constructions like pergolas are exposed to moisture and other elements each day, water from rain, heat from the sun … what affect do these have? The level of weathering and decay depends on a combination of these factors.
Timber can start to crack as sap water reduces and shrinking starts, fungi or termites can attack if the moisture content is high, leading to weathering and decay. Where timber is exposed to weather or to ground contact, higher hazard levels should be assumed.
Where timber is protected from the weather, such as verandah eaves or shielding, degrading due to weather will be minimized. Where no physical barrier exists, weathering will occur.
Pergolas are, traditionally, built from cedar wood, which can last many years. As these are outdoor structures, the pergolas can take a beating from these elements, so taking care of and maintaining your pergola is essential.
Our inspectors at Houspect can assess your pergola and advise if it is a hazard or will be with you for the long run.
