Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 28, 2020 12:41 pm Hi All Based in Victoria, I am going to build a 600mm high retaining wall in my backyard. The retaining wall will hold soil for a raised garden. The questions are; 1. Is it ok to build a retaining wall very close to the boundry fence (less than 100mm)? 2. The wall will be near the or on the "building envelope" per the building plan (not sure what is a building envelope) thanks in advance Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Retaining wall 600mm high close to boundry 3Dec 29, 2020 11:06 am Hi Joe, I don't know the answer but a couple of things worth checking: It looks like it is more a free-standing planter bed than a retaining wall which are normally defined as structures which offer stability to the adjacent ground. The guidelines on landscaping would likely be your local council's jurisdiction but there may be something in Victorian building regs (below) https://content.legislation.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-08/18-38sra011%20authorised.pdf Seems the opposite of a retaining - it looks about 0.5m above the adjacent property. The additional loads are small but you might find any surcharge load to adjacent shared boundaries has some council restrictions. The idea being the wall would be made to withstand a certain pressure so any new loads might be frowned upon. Even if you are okay with council just check the condition of the neighbouring property retaining wall if they have one on their side. It's been known for folk to blame the neighbours for pre-existing issues in some sort of ruse to get their wall replaced... I see there is an 'S' below the planter-Assuming its sewer you should also check your local water/sewer company guidelines on placing structures over assets-Google your water board/assets/building over/protection and you should get something. Seems I've not just failed at providing an answer but also provided more unanswered questions for you. Sorry about that. Re: Retaining wall 600mm high close to boundry 4Dec 29, 2020 7:03 pm Double check with your council. We have ret walks on 2 boundaries to the rear as we had to cross a 10.6 datum. Drainage was our issue. Your council website will be helpful- unless you are Bayside and its a maze of regulations. https://thomasarcherbuild.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html - Thomas Archer Homes - Custom Nouveau 41 Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing. If you just do a 400x200 footing it will fail in time.
