Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 01, 2020 6:54 pm Hey all, I am looking for some advice on switching my house build to all electric. We are a few weeks away from selections so I think the option is still open to us. Currently in the plan is instantaneous gas hot water service and a gas stove top. Our house is going to have 6.5kw of North West facing solar panels so I was thinking that we could cut out completely the requirement of gas supply if we switched the 2 appliances to electric. In theory I would like to get a 270l Chromogen hot water heat pump and use our solar panels to heat the water during the optimum period in the afternoon. My concerns are how effective these pumps are? I know there are some climate limitations and I would like to know will the tank be able to keep the water hot throughout the night without drawing electricity from the grid? I am aware that this route will be a few thousand dollars more upfront but I'm ok with that over the long run. If anyone has gone down a similar route I am interested in hearing your experience and thoughts. Thanks for reading Justin Re: Building an all electric house north of Adelaide 2Nov 01, 2020 7:15 pm May 2019 we went all electric in our existing house. We have a Sanden heat pump with a 250L tank (which is a bit big for the two of us). The heat pump runs for 2 hours every afternoon between 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm every afternoon. . . . so we are only using the solar panel power most days. The water is always very hot for my morning shower. The other change we made was to install a Induction cook top, which I love . . . . much better than gas and super easy to keep clean. NB I probably do around +70% of the cooking as my wife still works, so I am qualified to have an opinion on the cooktop. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! With the way how it seems to go now, they may start charging for the peak electricity owners sell to the grid. Unless there are plans for a battery, ensure that your electricity usage/bill in the peak sunny hours is requiring a reduction. Re: Building an all electric house north of Adelaide 6Oct 25, 2021 6:20 pm I've gone with a Sanden as above for hotwater, induction for cooking and r/c for heating cooling. Mine hot water is allowed to heat from 10:30am to 4:00pm and also no issues with water temp by the next morning. It actually only seems to run for about 2 hours normally and seems to only use about 2kw per day. Single person household though so the 300L tank is a bit of an overkill (though I only asked for a 250L and the builder installed the wrong one). Building an all electric house north of Adelaide 7Oct 26, 2021 7:30 pm We have 9kw solar and just use normal storage hws, it has a 2.4kw element retrofitted, so draws 10A on a timer 9:30-4pm, 4 people in house. Cylinder is 25yrs old. This was our power use on a typical sunny day in winter. This week we have averaged 80% independence. No way I would put gas in a new house. I’ve lived in a house with instant 3 phase electric and instant gas hws, both sucked with frequent d*dgy showers as the systems try to match the flow. You often need to open the hot tap more to cool the shower etc… Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Building an all electric house north of Adelaide 8Oct 27, 2021 12:00 am All electric household is the way to go, Heat pump HWU's are one of the most efficient types. I went with the Stiebel Eltron 302L unit, very happy with it so far (March 2019 Install). Currently uses 600w for around 3-4hrs per day in a two person household. The Sanden's also have good reviews but its high cost & split design can be an issue. Hi everyone!
