Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 04, 2020 11:23 pm Hi All, I am currently about to sign my contract with Boutique homes and was in the process of deciding where to provision space to keep a large server, NAS, 24 port PoE switch and router. I plan to provision 2-3 Unifi APs on the roof for WiFi coverage and Unifi cameras for surveillance. I only switch on the server when needed as it is very noisy and generates a lot of heat. Currently thinking of placing everything in the laundry linen where I have asked the builder to install an exhaust fan. I plan to terminate all data points to a patch panel inside the linen where I already have a double power point provisioned. Wanted to know your thoughts on how this could pan out and if anyone has been on a similar boat. Attaching my electrical plans for reference. Thanks. In your case, the laundry linen seems fine, especially if you think you won't be needing to work on the server much. Just be careful about thermal buildup in the laundry due to the washing machine / dryer setup. If you ventilate the room properly (fans on the server rack too) and maybe a combination lock on the linen cupboard door, you'll be OK. Re: Best area to place noisy server 3Sep 06, 2020 2:20 am Better option would be to consider installing Wi-Fi 6-based mesh system and use Wi-Fi based cameras (which can stream directly to the Cloud or to your local video server over Wi-Fi). For this set up, you would only need to position points strategically. Unifi APs are cheap and reliable but won't be able to provide you benefits of Wi-Fi 6 mesh network when it gets to speed and performance. You would pay a fortune for wiring things up, too. And yes, for servers you do not need huge towers those days anymore. Palm-sized mini servers with a RAID of small factor SSD drives while storing most of the content on the Cloud is something you can consider too. Re: Best area to place noisy server 4Sep 06, 2020 9:21 am I'm planning to use Raspberry Pi 4, 8Mb with Argon cooling case for my server in new build. Low power use, minimal noise and inexpensive. But I'm not using video security. There is lots on server setup in Raspberry Pi forum server section and lots of websites detailing setup. Some people have set them up as NAS as well. My noisy and power hungry old tower server running Windows Server 2003 has bitten the dust. Re: Best area to place noisy server 5Sep 06, 2020 3:28 pm Thanks for the feedback guys. I actually have all the stuff already and have been using it in my current rental:
I will get CAT 6 wiring done anyway. My concern is the placing of this stuff in the most optimal location in terms of heat dissipation and noise. Was planning to get a small rack but then again it will hog a lot of space (and I don't have enough space in the laundry to keep it there). Re: Best area to place noisy server 8Sep 26, 2020 8:49 pm Have you decided where you're putting the server? Is your linen cupboard still too small to accommodate it? I'm thinking if you have a top shelf in the cupboard, you could fit a 4RU rack in there for your gear. Or try a vertical mount? G'day! I'm looking for options to try and cut noise down in my patio.
