Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 21Mar 10, 2011 12:02 pm @B STAR We suggested our SS the same thing ! Why not have the fall of the roof to the left, and the downpipe running down left side of the pillar. But he insisted that the fall has to be on the front, and there is no other way to do it ! Very unhelpful of him, considering that they didn't even consult us before doing all this. @the_milesy Apparently the water board does not allow twists in the downpipes.. (so told to us by our SS) Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar .. help !!! 22Mar 10, 2011 1:09 pm rupz @the_milesy Apparently the water board does not allow twists in the downpipes.. (so told to us by our SS) Fair enough. I'm sure I have seen pipes go around corners before. No one would know if you just did it after handover Just make sure the pipe has a fall in it. But just painting it sounds like the easiest solution. The builder has agreed to remove the downpipe and instead put a nozzle instead ... But now I am not sure if a nozzle is better or should we let the downpipe remain ? Cheers Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar ..Is Nozzle a better idea 25Mar 11, 2011 9:23 am I would want to see the nozzle thing. Is it just a spout forcing the water out to the lawn or a sprinkler type. I've never seen one before so I don't know what it would look like. What happens in a downpour. Do you want the front lawn flooded with even more water. I think I would paint it the same as the pillar. After a while you probably wouldn't even notice it. Having a downpipe in the front (even if painted) might reduce the overall valuation of the property and so we did not want that. Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar ..Is Nozzle a better idea 27Mar 11, 2011 10:19 am We had an isolated roof simlar to yours on our last OB home, I took the DP just below the eave then through the brick pier & down the back of the pier(done before rendering), to a stormwater fitting I had installed before we poured the slab, I was very pleased with the result. imo, a nozzle onto the lawn will create a problem area (a soggy muddy lawn patch), what about a stainless steel, or Galvanised chain through nozzle down to a small pit filled with stones(the black plastic square ones with a grate over, about $15 i think) cheers Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar ..Is Nozzle a better idea 28Mar 11, 2011 11:04 am This is what we are having on our blade wall. Our roof is colourbond and it obviously runs to the side and not to the front as your roof appears to because of the positioning of the DP. Ours isn't installed yet. This pic is from the display of our house. DH saw it and wanted it more than a round pipe, which is what our builder normally puts in its place. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. He is not ready to listen to any of our ideas !!! Sticking that downpipe was his idea and he is adamant that it's the only solution in the world !!! Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar ..Is Nozzle a better idea 31Mar 11, 2011 11:52 am If it is a spout that directs the water out onto the ground/lawn below and not attached to ANY part of storm water system underground, then if it were me I'd be opting for a paint job instead! We had a spout/nozzle on a short section of guttering in our old house and when it rained heavily, water would pour out all over the grass below. The force of the water had eroded away part of the lawn and soil underneath leaving a crater in the ground. It was out the back and so no one really saw it, but it was still dangerous to have a crater in the grass with small children running around. If it were me, going by past experinces, I would not want this at the front of my new house! If it's just left to pour water out on grass, ultimately, the force of the water will splatter dirty drops all over surrounding areas too (bricks, render etc). This is my experience on an old house, it 'may' be done differently now, but make sure you find out exactly what they will be doing before going ahead with it! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... Way better than the downpipe I think ! I can't imagine why they didn't do something like this instead of putting a ugly DP that too on our feature pillar !! thanks a ton for posting the picture ! hmm, just thinking that if this chain is too close to the wall, it might affect the wall colour and also there is a possibility of mould etc... Re: Downpipe on our feature pillar ..Is Nozzle a better idea 33Mar 11, 2011 12:16 pm Not sure what material the chain is but looks like it is galvanised. I have been told that the water just runs down the chain. Not sure if there is a deluge of rain though. Time will tell. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.
