Rainwater tanks

I think we discussed on the forum with Allan Huang

He was quoted about the same - then went away and broke down the costs and found it was about right.

As someone building in an extreme bushfire danger area - we can't go with the cheap poly tanks that Rodda mentioned - they melt!

We have a rough quote for an underground 10,000L tank for garden irrigation & fire fighting purposes only (not linked in to toilets or washing machine) for about $7000 (including excavation costs)

our 2000l tank cost $1000 (stratco) and the plumber will plumb it to toilets (x3) and laundry sinks. the pump we chose has a 'switch to mains' when it gets low as we didn't want to fill our rainwater tank with mains water, i agree, it seems to defeat the purpose. the pump cost about $900.

I definitely don't want my tank filling with mains water, I drink rain water (yes, I know this has been a whole thread before) and I want to know that my tank is rain water not tap water.
I wanted a rainwater tap in the kitchen but apparently builders won't do this as they cannot be held responsible for drinking quality of rain water (state supplier responsible for tap water), I told them to pretend we wanted it for washing up then but answer still no, so we have compromised and are having tap in laundry. of course we will just fill jug from that and drink it anyway

I also agree, filling the tank with mains water does seem pointless. maybe we should look into the pump MaylandsManor mentioned.

i think our pump is made by 'onga' and has the mains diverter which is called a 'rainbank' (I think that is what it is called, but it is also by ONGA). there is a cheaper equivalent version done by orange pumps but i heard they are not as well made / durable. I thought the pumps that top up with mains water only fill up to a certain level and not the entire tank.

We're also doing it after handover. Same as Ray, we chose the solar hot water instead of the tank as standard.
It would definitely be cheaper to do it after handover.

Same here. Had the option with Carlisle Homes & chose the solar hot water as I believe the savings in the end will be more benificial compared with tanks. Looking to get a 2500 lt tank & pump once were moved in.

Hmmm we didn't get the option of a tank OR the gas boosted solar HWS with H3nley.. The tank was always an "option" if we wanted to pay $$$ for it...

We'll buy a tank after handover....no big deal for us atm.

I think you either need to have a solar hot water system or the water tank... for $7k you may as well buy and install the water tank yourself after handover... it will end up being alot cheaper... gosh 7k is steap

We're getting both solar hot water and a 5000l water tank installed by the builder. Overall, it might be more expensive, but it'll get done at the same time and its simpler for the mortgage.
