Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 13, 2023 9:52 pm This home was built by a volume builder a few years back and I need to get up into the roof cavity to check on a leak. I'm 6'7" and 110kg and I don't mind getting into tight spaces but I'm worried due to my weight I might come crashing through the ceiling. The builders have placed sheets of chipboard down which extend to the area I need to get to, and it looks like the gas ducted heating unit is also on ones of these boards. Is it safe for someone of my size to get across one of these boards or to balance on trusses? Re: Am I too heavy for the roof cavity? 3Feb 21, 2024 5:02 pm It depends where you step on and if you plan to bounce around. If it is chipboard it would depend upon the thickness of the chipboard. Minimal thickness chipboard could see you collapse through and plumet through the ceiling cavity Re: Am I too heavy for the roof cavity? 4Feb 23, 2024 9:09 am Firstly, if your house is still under builder's warranty (10 years in Victoria) you should have no need to crawl into roof space but let the builder handle it, unless you have done work that may have caused a leak. At 110 kg you are not too heavy, I am nearly your weight and have crawled into thousands of roof spaces but there are risks. You could either fall through or get stuck or cause ceiling damage, who is going to get you out? Make sure someone else is about and make sure you have a mobile with good coverage in case you need help. Have you got full PPE or will you breathe in glass fibres from insulation? It will be safer for you to get a professional. There may be a safer way to check on your roof leak.
