Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 06, 2020 10:06 am Such a manual gate will cost me about $4,500 fully installed and in alu, so I decided to go partial DIY. The dimensions of the alu RHS are as follows and are suggested by commercial gate manufacturers: Bottom post: 100x50x3, 5600 long with a 400mm tail for a possible motor installation Verticals and top: 50x50x3, five verticals, clad horizontally either with 16 of 65x15mm thick wooden boards or alu slats at 65x15mm. The gate alone without cladding with those dimensions and in steel RHS of same size weighs about 88kg. Alu makes it about 15% dearer, so I am looking at getting it welded in steel and I am wondering if I can get away with 80x40x3 RHS for the bottom and 40x40x3 for the verticals and horizontal top? A tricky question as you either have to be an engineer with a "black belt' in calculating deflections or you have such a gate in steel for a two-car wide car port with a 5400mm wide opening?
