I know you can get little bits of adhesive felt to stick on to the bottoms of chair / table / sofa legs so that they slip around easily on your floorboards and don't scratch them.
If I am thinking about getting some bar stools with a pedestal base like the following, what is the best way to prtoect the floorboards? Do you just get a great big circular piece of felt and stick it on? Or lots of the little square pieces and stick them around the rim of the base?
What did you / will you / would you do?
thanks in advance
I would liquid nail a piece of rubber to the underside using a piece the same size as the base cut out from a sheet etc.
Hi Donuts,
We've had polished floor boards in a couple of houses now and I was/am forever worrying about scratching. The felt dots just fall off every time the chair gets moved - especially dining chairs
I find regularly wiping the feet of all my chairs to remove any dust/grit build up helps prevent the fine scratches. The bases of those stools should be big enough for a decent sheet of felt though. I think if you could find a way to make it stay on then that would work well.
Thanks Luke
- is rubber better then felt?
Jellylegs - funny I have never had that problem with my felt bits
Currently we have stools with 4 skinny legs, and what happens is the whole bottom bit of the leg comes off, so we have to hammer in a whole new leg bottom, THEN stick a piece of felt on it! But the felt itself has never been a problem! I think ours come from Bunnings.
We used this felt glide for kitchen chairs on our wooden floors for years. They do n eed replacing after a few years, but that's no problem as they're not expensive.
It is simply hammered into the leg of you chair. The very thick & solid felt pad is attached to a plastic base. It is very sturdy. There are different widths.
Sorry don't know how much as I bought them through my workplace quite a few years ago.
Go to the link & type in page 10.4 at the top of page

For the stool, I would go with the rubber idea & silicone it to the base. I imagine the stools would be rather heavy, so regular felt won't last.
Great info, thanks Southies!
Do you know where I could get this hafele stuff as a retail customer? They look to be an industry-only type company?
hehe! Dots drive me dotty! Yours must be a better quality than mine.
Wouldn't having rubber on the base make it hard to slide the chair out to sit on? I was going to suggest going to a rubber shop to see if they could make something up, but then thought it would make moving the chair difficult.
Give them a call & ask where you can get these glides.

Jellylegs - yes I would've thought the same thing about the rubber? I use it to stop slipping in some circumstances!
Southies thanks for that - I found an e-mail address for them just now so will send them an e-mail.
This thread is somewhat disturbing....
Jo we are talking about furniture
Just as an update ... I got an e-mail back from the Hafele office in Melbourne to say that I can visit their showroom in Dandenong to buy their stuff, or orders can be placed over the phone. In case anyone else was interested
That's great Donuts !
Take a good look at their other stuff if you go to the showroom. they have some amazing things.
The company I work for is a high end commercial fitout company & they almost exclusively use Haefele, as it's one of the best manufacturers of furniture fittings coming out of Germany. So that's a pretty good recommendation.

Hi Donut,
Can you please give me the phone number of the Melbourne office? I would be getting these stuffs too.
Thanks...
cheers,
Hannah
Hi Hannah, below is an extract from the e-mail I received. They didn't mention shipping costs. I haven't got around to visiting or calling yet. Good luck

You may purchase these furniture gliders by either calling our office on 9212-2000, pay over the phone by credit card and we can deliver to you.
Or alternatively you can visit our showroom in Dandenong and purchase over the counter.
All you would need to do is quote the catalogue number of the particular furniture glide you require (found on the catalogue page 10.4).
Many thanks
