Can Flooring Type Affect Internal Temperature Of A House?

Just wondering, can the type of flooring you have affect the internal temperature of your house, particularly dusing summer? I have carpet upstairs at the moment, but I imagine tiles or floorboards (they'd have to be floating, in my case) would keep my (town)house cooler...

I live in the Inner West area of Sydney, closer to the city/Botany Bay rather than the Greater West. The front of my townhouse seems to cop the full brunt of the sun for the majority of the day. By my rough calculations, the front of the house faces north.
In the peak of summer if your house faces north it should be shaded from sunlight.
Curtains will help if the axis of your house is on is north east or north west...
