Tiling surface help

So, midway through pulling out our old kitchen and I've started removing the sad old tiles which have been glued onto plasterboard. The paper/cardboard is torn and uneven so I'm wondering how to prep this surface in order to tile a new splashback once the new kitchen is in. Any thoughts? Re-sheeting the whole kitchen not really an option, This was meant to be a budget reno 😂
