a standard bedroom for eg, could be 1x batten holder or 1x high output LED Downlgiht with large spread, or 2-4x shallow spread LED Downlights.
All will do the job required but its up to the owner as to what they like the look of.
I would go and have a look at http://www.philips.com.au/c-m-li/residential-lighting-plan as their 15min guide is a good start to highlight what lighting areas are important and what they are to be used for.
After doing that you should decide on what type of lighting you want to use, batten standard lamps, LED downlights, fluros etc, look up some specs on different light fittings that you like and then use http://www.greenluxled.com.au/recommended-light-levels-for-various-tasks-and-activities/ as a rough guide on the light output required for a task
