We are doing a knock down rebuild. Jemena advised that they have disconnected the gas service. I went to check and saw the gas meter has been removed, but not the gas pipe line on the ground?
I thought the whole thing should be removed? I don't want the demolition company to turn up and saying the gas service is still active......
I've also been notified by the certifier that due to the close distance between our garage and neighbor's one (<900mm), we need to have a adjoining wall dilapidation report before demolishing the house. Does anyone have recommended engineer to do the report?
Thanks in advance!

Our gas abolishment (also by Jemena) is similar to yours....
Jemena also dug up a small section of the council nature strip and disconnected at the other end of the gas supply pipe (that they also left in the ground like yours). Have a look on the Council nature strip to see any signs of excavation.
We also have to get dilapidation reports to satisfy council consent conditions. Not sure where you're your located, so this may or may not help you, but we're in Sydney and I requested quotes from the following companies:
http://www.bspr.com.au/ https://childspropertyinspections.com.au/ https://ausdilaps.com.au/ https://www.sydneyengineers.com/ https://www.consultingengineersydney.com.au/ <-- did not respond
https://rossengineers.com.au/ <-- did not respond
I'm going with the first one (BSPR), the price was competitive and they're local to me. Inspection should be carried out in the next week or so.
Thanks so much for the information robw17! Much appreciated it!
We are in Sydney too. I'll go check out the gas and BSPR tomorrow. Cheers~
Very confused about Gas abolishment. Hope to get some advice here.
I was told it takes 20 working days from the day the house is vacant. that's a very long waiting time.
Can I contact AGL while I'm still living in the house and let them know the demolish date so they can ensure it's done before that date?
does it matter if I'm still living in the house while they do the abolishment? Understand there will be no gas for the house, but other than that is there any other issues?
Thanks!
" I was told it takes 20 working days from the day the house is vacant. that's a very long waiting time. "
Ha! We were told 50 days but had it done in about a week.
" does it matter if I'm still living in the house while they do the abolishment? Understand there will be no gas for the house, but other than that is there any other issues?"
No. They don't care unless there is an elderly person or someone with health issues living there ( I think that is mentioned in there T & C's ).
I'd just book it in for their earliest time.

We were told that Jemena will use best endeavours to remove the gas meter in 20 business days, but some areas could take longer, and that our retailer (Energy Australia) could only lodge the paperwork two days before our vacant date. When we filled out the application form, simply due to an oversight on our part, we didn't advise a vacant date and the abolishment was actually completed about a week after we submitted the application. We were surprised how quickly they got to it and as result we got a phone call that went something like "we're here to remove the gas meter but we can see through the windows that there's still furniture in the house". A simple confirmation from us that we had vacated but still had some furniture to move and they were happy to proceed. As I recall, 40 minutes (and $1155) later and the abolishment was completed.
Thank you very much! This is very helpful!
