Cost for cabinet maker to build shelves to a blank wall

Hello helpfull people!

I want to turn my lounge room into my little library. The room is 4.5mx3.9m. I want to put shelving on one of the walls. I was thinking of having one of the wall full of shelving, so the shelves would be 2.7m x 4.5m. Does anyone know how much it would cost to have this done?

I dont know whether I should get my builder to do it or want for handover and get a cabinet maker to do it.

Any response would be greatly appreciated.
Speaking on behalf of our business, and the majority of businesses we know, a cabinet maker typically wont come out only for shelving, and if they do, then expect to pay a fair bit for it. I think it would be better to get a quote from your builder first.
Do you want solid timber, timber veneer, timber laminate, painted MDF, any laminate ?? You need to be more specific as this will affect the cost.

Straight off, timber veneer would cost you from $ 4000 for anything about 4LM. Solid timber will naturally be dearer & the other options are cheaper.
I dont want anything fancy, probably just normal white laminate.
Maybe I should just get the builder to quote it. I just thought that builders would charge more as they put their markups ontop.

Thanks.
I'd get in touch with a kitchen company & find out whether they could do it.
These people are doing a semi-custom home office for us at the moment, they also do custom shelving units and have a range of near-custom stuff that may suit...for us they are doing two standard corner units with a custom matching infill piece to suit the room size.

They do laminate (broad range - Laminex and Formica) and solid timber and I thought the pricing was pretty good...and so far service has been spot on.

They are in Hawthorn.
Thanks Southies. It's just hard coz if it's way too expensive, we might not be able to afford it, so i dont want to waste time with the builder. What to do?

TDL, thanks for the link. I will check it out!!
I definately think you should get a price from the builder - better to take the risk and not do it then wonder if they could have done it cheaply for years to come

And looking at companies the specialise in offices is definately a great idea!

Thanks Bam. I will ask the builder for a quote. And i will probably ask other tradies for quote. Since your in the industry, do you know how much it would cost to get the shelving done in normal white laminate?
The fiancee said that for him to "look at the job" he'd charge a minimum of $2k for Melamine shelves (I wasnt sure what you meant by 2.7m by 4.5 meters? So I couldnt get a specific price).
He suggested that if your able, to buy the melamine and do it yourself? Or if you know a friend who could do you a favour?
Are you talking about a set of free standing "open" cabinets full of shelves or a set of shelves hanging off the walls?

I specified a set of 4 x "Jarrah" colour board open shelf units 1100mm high x 1000mm wide x 300mm deep from my local supplier no worries - I just had to know exactly what I wanted and they cut and drilled the boards easy (I put them together myself because I can, but assembly in the workshop would also be possible)...as TDL said, the units were essentially just variations on their standard range; in your case I would imagine that you could ask for 4 x 2400mm High (or so) 1100mm wide whiteboard Open Pantry Units at whatever depth you are after.

Cheers,

Earl
Bam, I want a shelf that is 2.4m high (sorry, not 2.7m) x 4.5m wide.

Thanks Earl. I just want a set of shelves hanging on a wall. I just want the shelves to cover the entire wall. Where did you get your shelves from and how much did you pay for it. Hrmz, do you think it would be easy to do yourself? I never even thought about it, but i guess if i get all the stuff supplied, I would probably be able to just install it myself.

Thanks.
Aaah ok, see I was thiking shelving as in... shelves, not an open bookcase sort of thing, my bad!

He said that you would be looking at around $2500...

I definately think you could do it yourself... and if it doesnt work, you can stick it in the garage
I dont think I'm making myself clear, so I'll try and attach photos of what I want. This is my first time posting a photo so bear with me!!

I want a built in bookcase for my 4.5m wide wall. I probably should have said the word 'built in bookshelf' from the beginning.

I just got an entire wall of built-in shelves done - almost exactly the same size, perhaps just a little bigger.

I got Tas oak veneer on 12mm chipboard, fitted with skirting, facia and backboard, with adjustable shelves. It is all nicely flush with the ceiling and walls.

All up about $4100. (I was impressed by the earlier estimate of Southies which was spot on !)

A good friend of mine is doing it the hard way and building two walls of shelves from solid pine. So far he's spent almost as much as me just on the wood. And he's still going, I'm unpacking books

I understood after your earlier post explaining, first I had no idea

He said at the cheapest end you would look at around $2500 out of Melamine (the stuff your kitchen shelving is made of), and the price would go up depending on the whether you choose another material.

You never said whether you were 'handy' or not?? If you are, then i really think you should get a quote for the melamine yourself - try second hand places as they often buy offcuts from companies (which are decently sized too). If your not, or dont have patience to work with mm's then id suggest going through a company
Thanks Bam!

I would like to think that I'm handy, but my bf likes to think otherwise!! haha
I love DIYs and my friends and I have done a few handy projects together.

Hrmz, but having said that, I'm not sure whether I should risk doing it myself.
I think if you're going to be putting books on all the shlves (as opoosed to light knick-knacks) then you'll want to be sure to do it right. Books are damn heavy and you sure don't want your shelves collapsing.
I wanted two walls done for my place a couple of years and got quoted about $10,500 (almost 15mx 2m worth of wall ).

I ended up purchasing 8 plain freestanding bookshelves instead for $150 each, colour matched the stain of the architrave's wood and got a handyman to attach them to the wall and do a bit of edging.

All up it cost me $1,600 and it looks custombuilt.

It won't work for everyone but its something to consider.
