On the weekend, I attempted to put together the rest of our home network. It took a while to get everything to talk to each other.

So far it’s been working well so fingers crossed

Is that black cabinet your own? Or is it from M?

Hi EB, we got the cabinet and Cat6 cables from 4Cabling. They have cabinets of all sizes and can be wall mounted but we chose one off the ground with wheels that can be locked as we didn’t want to drill more holes into the walls

Yeah, 4cabling is a great resource for IT infrastructure gear at pretty good prices.

Here's My Hikvision cameras, they have the best standalone software IMHO and can still be used with your favourite NVR be it in the cloud or on premise.

These are from their Iphone app:

Great minds, same set up here. 4cabling rack and HikVision 1080p cameras (8)

Really enjoyed putting it all together. Terminated all CAT6 cables to patch panel.

Managed Netgear switch, NVR for CCTV, amp for 7 speakers around the house (driven by an excellent Neet AirPlay device), Synology 4 bay NAS, 4k HDMI matrix with 4 4k sources for TV distribution around the house.

And of course a thermostat controlled double fan unit to keep temps down.

I’m not in IT, so it’s been an education!

Thanks Vista, I think I actually got the cabling inspiration from you orginally
A fan that is programmable based on temperature is a good idea. I might look into it

Have a look on NBN.com.au, better description than I can provide!

Not sure EB as we are transitioning to NBN but won’t actually be on NBN until around April next year.

How many RU is that data rack? Looking to get a similar sized one. Also, hows the temperature in the garage? Not sure whether i should put my rack in the garage or maybe a cupboard or something.

Thanks!

Some people put it in their WIR where their alarm panel is so it’s inside the house and harder to access. However, either way you will need to use fans to keep the cabinet cool and it could get loud if it is inside. The benefit of keeping it out of sight is that you can put your NVR there as well. Otherwise you’ll have to find a place to hide your NVR so that your footage doesn’t disappear if someone manages to access your cabinet.

Hi all,

We finally got our entertainment unit installed in the family room. I think it looks nice although it probably could have been slightly lower in hindsight
The good thing is that the sound bar sits neatly below the tv and everything including the subwoofer can fit inside

Merry Christmas and safe holidays everyone!
Great setup! Perhaps mount the TV a bit higher?

Hi EB, yes one of the cables is our phone line. We have a separate cable for our cable internet. Our area is in the process of implementing NBN but because our NBN will be HFC, our internet service provider just got NBN to install an extra cable for the Internet.

Thanks QB and did both cables come through the one conduit that M instslled. The Telstra lead in tech told me that he will push the Pstn wire through the conduit to the house wall near the meter box. But he said I will need an electrician to draw that wire into the house to the garage wall. Can you explain what you had to do for your phone and internet since you too dont have Nbn and you too took the Fibre optic package from M. Will find a pic of what is in my garage.

Q, Thank you for bringing to life an entire 3 year of your build.. I read your blog through the last 2 weeks & could live through the entire timeline, relate to the emotions you may have gone through... documenting learnings, surprises from very stage of your build.. delays from things we could have controlled (retainer wall) to things we couldn’t control (like that rainfall during March & never ending wait for OC) !!!! Phew...it was like reading a book !!

For me it was HIGHLY helpful & I have taken note of at least 30+ Points to address from this blog....

Thanks much !!! I will notify you when I begin my KDR blog shortly.. we are planning a family + granny home @ WPH !!! Short listed 2 designs from 2 builders..
Hi Ramesh, glad to have been able to contribute to your research. The community here’s great and very helpful. There were many people that knew more than I did and I learnt a lot from them. Good luck with your build.

Hi guys.
Just out of curiosity.
Have you checked how many projects does your site manager look after?
And are you happy with his job so far?
