we made some decisions - finally, about lights.

https://www.beaconlighting.com.au/vaill ... hrome.html for the staircase void

https://www.beaconlighting.com.au/south ... steel.html x 2 for the kitchen island bench.

wife isnt sure if we should put 2 lights hanging down for the stairs void, or just 1... decisions decisions.

We are doing two lights over the kitchen island bench as well. We went to a specialist lighting shop in Armadale for design advice and they said that there has been a shift from three pendants to two recently in regards to current trends.

If you do put two in the stairs I would ensure they are two different sizes. Although I think only one is necessary there.
Hi Chrisoshizz,

We have a similar lock and looking into building the same size house. Do you mind pm me the approx cost? I’m not trusting what the builders are telling me..
Yeah I think two over bench is more in keeping with Hamptons style, where the pendants tend to be larger/ over sized. As for void, again depends on size. We are having one and it’s gotta be pretty huge IMO to make the right impact - if we ever find one that doesn’t break the bank! All the ones I like are $1k +

The lighting choices are lovely. Your Mrs certainly has good taste! I’ve been eyeing off the Vaille ones from Beacon too for the master bedroom

Yeah we are definitely doing 2 over the island bench. The pendants are large enough to make it work.

Leaning towards 1 light in the void on stairs. The light is 550mm tall, 520mm wide so it's not small. Should be fine.

I'm annoyed our choice of bathroom lights is so limited. Apparently there is some rule that the light bulb can't be exposed on lights on wet areas so we have to find something encased in glass.

I didn’t realise that about the bathroom lights. I guess that goes for a wall sconce above the mirror too?

Apparently so. I think there is a way around it by converting the light to 12volts but I'm still looking into it.

Yeah it’s a good idea to get bathroom lights that are at least rated IP44. From what I’ve seen, there’s not a lot of choice around as to styles. So I have been looking online at some UK sites as they apparently have the same voltage. Wish the US had the same voltage as there’s so much more Hamptons style stuff to choose from over there

Progress finally. Some weatherboards up!

I'm very happy with the James Hardie scyon linea weatherboards. The profile and quality is great. No sanding or maintenance!

Low and behold beacon lighting has a sale so will likely get some lights bought soon.

Awesome Chris! Yes the linea boards are pretty good and look great. Just watch for any gaps in how they’ve been laid.

As for Beacon, reckon you can do better than 20% off, just sayin’

I got my dining pendant during one of their sales for I think 25-30% off

Thanks!! It's a bit of a game of chicken really. I need to try get them cheap as I can while the right stage of the build is progressing

If I wait and they aren't on sale then I'm stuffed paying full price.

Oh man looks great! It's coming together.
Thanks mate. First lick of paint today!!

Yay! Thank goodness for some decent painting weather. Looks great!!

Love it!

Nice progress, I'm using the JH Linea weatherboards too.

You go for the 150 or 180mm?

Did the spray it or paint it by roller/brush?

I'm going to paint it myself (upper floor cladding), will get the professionals to paint the interior.

I was looking at HJ Axon cladding which looks modern, but I felt it was better to use something that is timeless.

I wouldn't worry too much about the beacon lighting sale, there are sales on every other week, plus, you can always ask for a discount if they aren't on sale.

Go the 180 boards. Looks better. Because you lose a bit with how they overlap. I'm very happy with the product.

No idea how they painted it. Looks like brushes from what I can see.

I agree 180 is better due to overlap.

We had massive dramas today about the number of pendants.

Interior designer told us we would only need 2, electrician swore on a bible we would need 3, and that he had actually installed 3 of the SAME lights at a recent client and it looked perfect. He even measured out our bench and we tried to visualise it.

2, 3, 2, 3 - back and forth. We decided to put 2 in, in the end. Only reason was the pendants are a little bigger so we think it will look less busy. Plus I figured if I am paying a designer I might as well use her opinion. lol

Who asked him?! Lol. I’m sure 3 looks nice too but if it’s not the look you’re going for, then stick to your instincts.

I would take the designer’s opinion over his as well!

Yesterday I dropped into a few independent lighting shops. Let’s just say I’ve never seen so many crystal chandeliers in my life, and they werent the good sort! Personally don’t get the appeal for your everyday home. Too OTT for me.

Guess we are going to have to make the trip over the river to see some quality stuff. We want a real statement piece for the stairs void but something a bit rustic. So still have to decide that, also pendant for master (quite like the 5 light Bellay silver orb from Beacon) and one for the powder. Also feature lighting to front pillars (prob just some standard SS up-down lights, but not sure about other external floodlights -but thinking something with sensors. What are you doing for outside lighting?

Have you looked at About Space?

dimensions on your original plan are inconsistent and with accurate dimensions (including site plan, upstairs and down) i could make a proper scale drawing with furniture…
