raised gardenbeds for ya veggies

A while back there was a thread somewhere that had folks talking about raised garden beds.

I mentioned about the galvanised corrie iron ones and also the colour bond raised beds as well. these are along the lines of water tank shapes and are instant

Now here in WA they are available from http://gardenersdirect.com.au/

I have since found a couple of others for those of you on the east coast.

Thanks so much Fu Manchu - DH was talking about this recently. Just what we need.

Will keep this on file for next year, when the house gets finished -if ever !
+1 thanks Fu Manchu.

Any secret mixes you could recommend when filling it up, for best results.

I suppose any good soil mix with plenty of organic material would do the trick.

Cheers Michael.

Well I am only clued up on good soils for WA from experience with these two

For $140 you can get untreated hardwood sleepers (about $14 each for 2.1m lengths) to make a very substantial 4.2m x 1.1m raised bed. Much cheaper, more robust, and I suggest - more appropriate than metal.

Another trick I have read is using 1 part vermiculite, 1 part coir or peat and 1 part compost. (from the Square Foot Gardening idea)

Otherwise - that's a lot of garden soil and gets fairly pricey.

And much more practical and in keeping with the natural environment.......

But hey.. certainly not as trick as the Brendan Moar garden water tank and you can even grow a lawn inside the tank if you want...oh so trendy and cool...
These metal raised beds are very popular here in WA. I think Josh Burn uses them in his garden in Freo. (pretty sure I have seen them in the back ground on gardening australia) Every garden show that comes around they are always in many designs and company displays. I have also seen them used to great effect in modern landscapes.
