How to install a wall plate with a wooden stud in the middle

Hi guys I’ve tried to install an electrical wall plate by cutting through plasterboard with a c clip although there is a stud in the middle and can’t get the wall plate fully onto the clip because of the stud, the clip doesn’t seem to be able to move back after being screwed onto. Do you guys have any other ideas on how to attach the wall plate?
