Benchtop Colour

We're renovating our 1986 kitchen and can't decide on a bench-top colour. We're going for laminate for cupboard doors (in a warm white) and bench-tops but have a slate floor to consider in our colour scheme. It's lovely but quite "busy" - with lots of ochre, grey, blue, and "slate" colour in it. Not sure whether to go light or dark for the bench-tops and don't want the bench-top to "compete" with the floor. I'd love your advice.
Having Slate as a flooring i would be keeping the benchtop light in colour.
