If you are also thinking about solar panels, go electric.
Heat pump HWU's are great, just stay away from DUX & Rheem units as they have heaps of bad reviews. Best heat pump units on market are Bosch & Sanden. But you have to factor in a few things like
-Do you have solar?
-Noise a issue?
-Your power tariffs (flat rate vs peak/off peak)
It will be outside the main bedroom, so def don't want something to noisy.
I think we do have off peak electricity in our box... it is labelled on there, I will need to ask the electrician.
We do not have solar at the moment. Not sure if worth getting.
Having no solar I would not recommend a electric system. Between heat pump & solar, I would go with heat pump. Heat pump systems work in any weather conditions vs solar which will use electric/gas booster in low sunlight conditions, Solar HWS takes up roof space & will likely get in way if you ever plan to get solar power system, Solar HWS installation/maintenance becomes more expensive on two story homes & noise is not really an issue with heat pumps but might give picky neighbors a reason to complain (unlikely). If you're on a flat rate power tariff (you can tell by your power bill) you can just set for unit to run during day anyway.

I was looking at a Hydrotherm has anyone had experiences with this?
Personally never heard of them before, there is a huge thread on Whirlpool about them (see link below). Quick skim through thread a few minor issues but warranty/after sales service is excellent rectifying issues.
