If you go a smaller pelmet and maybe a more neutral colour they shouldnt dominate. And if your still worried, why not go a really fancy curtain rod instead?

Yes, easily replaced... maybe the sashes on your downstairs windows are too heavy for the longer chain, but I doubt that. Ed

it sounds like they were a bit lazy then, they should have sanded it up smooth before painting/putting finish on - esp with that exposed edge that you see when the door is open.
