I am building a new 2 story home in QLD with a project builder. As per their standard design, to comply with the NCC windows to the upper floor are fitted with restrictors to stop the window opening more than 125mm. However I do not want this because I want maximum ventilation throughout the house. ...

I imagine the thickness of the wall needs to be thick enough to accomodate however many panels you have. In our case we decided against the cavity slider due the the extra wall space required Do you remember the thickness of each stacker sliding door? And do you remember the overall thickness requi...

Since the opening is adjacent to a hallway, I cannot afford to have any protrusion at all. I honestly think the only solution is a single cavity sliding door covering the entire span of 2.8 m So do that then. Seems like the easy choice to me. It's a bit early to be saying it's a simple choice. ID n...

Yes, the “problem” is 80cm for our bifold door. Since the opening is adjacent to a hallway, I cannot afford to have any protrusion at all. I honestly think the only solution is a single cavity sliding door covering the entire span of 2.8 m

Yes, we have 5 panels. When folded back completely, the stack is fairly thick, but these are external, double glazed doors. Internal doors should be a lot thinner. Which dimension is the 80cm you refer to? Is it the dimension that I marked as "problem " in my attachment in my last reply?

Incidentally, the diagrams you’ve shown are double doors, NOT bifolds. Bifolds concertina, so the door arcs are a lot smaller. In our case we decided against the cavity slider due the the extra wall space required and went for bifolds instead which worked better with our design. The opening is 4m, ...
I think the protrusion might be a problem when in the open position: So in your case, this distance was 80cm?

Ok, so far here are the options in the above replies. I'll break down the pro's and cons: Reducing the opening to 2.4 meters and using two 1.2 meter cavity Sliding Doors No, that's compromising the architecture and openness of the design. I don't want to do that if there is a solution to span the fu...

Because, that's compromising the architecture and openness of the design. I don't want to do that if there is single cavity sliding door which can span the full 2.8 meters. That's the critical question here. I'm hoping that somebody may have done this before, in this forum. I would have thought that...

Hi All, Background: I am trying to select a new home design. One of the designs has a 2.8 m wide opening to a media room, without a door to it. I want to add a cavity sliding door.If I wanted to install a cavity slider door, what are my options? I have been told by my builder that the widest sliding...

Can you tell me which builder this was? Eden Brae, but the others were prepared to do it too. What I found is that sales and admin don't know much about "non-standard" things, unless they cam across it in the past. You should generally insist they speak with the estimating team, or tell t...

I lived in a steel frame house for 20 years ... and couldnt think of anything better. Our current house is timber frame.. I didnt bother to ask about price diff of steel.. thought it would be way more exxy. Much stronger, no termites, and less fuel in the event there is a fire... what more can you ...
So, the steel frame home that you rate highly of, was this a single story or 2-story house?

Mrs, out of curiosity, have you compared the sound with other steel framed homes? I mean, has anyone on this forum built with a steel frame that can provide their opinion about this? If so, what did they say about the noise in their home? It’s not steel frames, it’s floor joists. Most double story ...

Thanks all, sorry for the slow response. We are getting an engineering report done this week to check out the cracks and the noise so hopefully that will shed some light on things. It's not so much when it's windy although I do notice it then a lot. Usually the change in temperature really kicks it...

We are just in the final stages of a owner built steel frame house. I used to work in the timber industry and have built in timber in the past. Pros of steel, frames and trusses are light and straight to work with. Termites etc as others have said. Cons some tradies don't like/or are used to workin...
