I hear that rant! Baby bonus is the one that irks me - why should those of us who are productive in society miss out on the same incentive those on welfare/dole get for having a baby :? (Sorry to go OT!) The one thing we've discovered about the baby bonus that we didn't know is that it's based on y...

Mike - you can made an orchard that produces a decent qty if you espalier fruit trees about 1.5m apart - so you'd need about 10m long and 1m wide. Now that 's an idea worth investigating! We are already planning to have an espaliered lemon, lime and orange out the back of our house, so doing someth...

Mission impossible?? Frangapani in Melbourne

I've had issues with frangipanis in Melbourne--four of them have died, one I've resuscitated, and only one has lived through all the winters. Essentially, the cold winter nights in Melbourne have given the trees frostbite: the tips of the branches have turned black and ended up not shooting again wh...

I can't suggest any suppliers, and neither can I make any promises about the availability of the following, but you could look at Tallowwood or Blackbutt as alternatives. --Mike

Today's Lazy Gardener Question: Instead of digging up the layer of straggly grass and weeds, and THEN laying a weedmat & gravel, can I just put the weedmat directly on top ? Will the weedmat and gravel be enough to kill the weeds underneath ? I have to agree with Da Vinci--in our experience we'...

Nice! I think all of us have a whole bunch of gardening ideas that we'd love to execute if we had the space! My own personal wishlist includes a small orchard, a bamboo grove, a recirculating stream, a picturesque wooden bridge, and a collection of really big, broad, spreading deciduous trees under ...

Hi freeon-- First question: do you include the garage in your 12sq desired size? If so, that makes for a tiny house--a double garage is nearly 4sq, leaving very little space for three bedrooms, laundry, storage space, kitchen, bathroom, dining room and living room. May I ask how you arrived at your ...

We don't head to Watergardens shopping centre often (if we're going "shopping" we'll head to Highpoint), but the recently opened areas have made it much more attractive as a general place to do the shopping, and there are plenty of home improvement places nearby (Bunnings, nurseries, et cetera) so y...

Hmm, mud....is it preferable to dust? Difficult choice. I reckon it is: clean the mud up and it's gone. Clean the dust up and it's back the next morning!

Amazing the difference you can see across different batches. I certainly wouldn't accept them looking like that--and when you suggest the site ...

I'd vote for Taylor's Hill. Close to an already-established area, so no waiting for things to be organised. I would stay away from Caroline Springs--we live just the other side of Kororoit Creek, and hear nothing but trouble about it--especially the hoon drivers on the streets at night. Craigieburn ...

I don't want to but I probably will sound like a complete idiot for asking this! Where does one get the 30sq etc figures from? Well, the question I would ask is this: are you comfortable with your decision? If so, and if you have justified it to yourself (through whatever means makes sense to you), then you should be fine, and it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. I have no doubt that (for some proportion of people),...

Why flat roof tiles
Building A New House

We were expecting fairly similar ($4-5k) costs to upgrade our tiles to the flat look had we wanted to. However, I just couldn't get past the issue of not having channels for water runoff from the roof. That and it was going to cost an arm and a leg. On top of the other arm and leg we'd already paid ...

I understand your husband's position on not wanting to get too far ahead of yourselves. However, trust me when I say it's worse to be in a position where you have to make all the decisions now now now!!! Everything suddenly becomes much less fun that way. Most builders won't even look at you unless ...
