Well the good news is that our approval to build just came back from the Private Certifier. As I've been saying in this thread, we have made some changes to the kitchen layout which left me with a small island bench of only 1400mm long. The depth is 900mm. We can't lengthen anymore. However, to try ...

VandM - What did you decide on? We are at early stages as well. We have picked Blackheath Bricks with off-white mortar, dark grey roof and downpipes. We are having timber coloured front door and garage door (can't remember the name but similar to a Mahoganny). We originally choose Woodland grey for ...

We decided to go with a Private Certifier to get the demolition approval, rather than through the local council. In my view, the Private Certifier is the way to go. It really didn't end up costing too much more than the Council fees and the person we had did it extremely quickly and efficiently. Ver...

We're still going with the raised height of the house. Have paid the next tender deposit. At this stage, looks like demolition of our current home in mid March. Going through a private certifier, rather than Council, to get approval to demolish. Council has too much paperwork and seems like they'll ...

We were forwarded our draft plan which had our proposed house sitting low. Looking at the plan, they have cut areas that we didn't want cut. We went to our plan presentation meeting where items on the plan were explained. The Construction Liaison Officer was very nice. We did, however, ask for the s...

Thanks Wazza773. I did question it, but was told this was the price. It's not even the whole house - just one side to make it level with the rest of the house.

Yep, we were very surprised at that amount. We told them we wanted the house the same as where our current house is. One side of the current house is on piers. It means that it needs to go up about 946mm on one side because we didn't want to cut as our house would look low. The original tender came ...

April 2015 - Settled on the land, and received the tender that includes Site costs. This came as a shock, as it was an additional $25,000 which put the house build over our budget. The site costs included fill, drop edge beams around the whole of the house, scaffolding costs, increase piering, mach...

Hi Jazz_J. Not sure if you're still on this thread - Love the look of your home using the Blackheath bricks. We were thinking of using Blackheath as well, but have seen some in our area that look poorly done. Did you have any issues with your bricks, such as mortar staining, brick staining, etc.?

Thanks so much for the information. I love the Blackheath and don't expect anything to be perfect. I was wondering the same as you mentioned - that mostly an inexperienced bricklayer could be the problem. Some of the homes we have seen with the Blackheath look amazing. Your later photos of your bric...

Hi Wizard, not sure if you're still on this page - I know it's been years - How did you end up going with the brickwork? We were thinking of going with Blackheath (Boral) but have seen some houses that look like the mortar is staining from them. Is your brickwork still ok?

Yes they say the home is done in about 38 weeks, but I've noticed a few of them being built near me and they seem to be closer to the 12 month mark. There is a 1 year old Allcastle Home (Grandworth 42) for sale around the corner from me which goes for auction end of November, so that will be interes...

We were after a darker coloured brick. At this stage, it looks like we might go with Boral Bricks - Blackheath colour. This is an upgrade.

I went out to Boral and Austral today with the list ACH gave me. The list now does not include Emerald, Mahoganny, Mocha, Roma, Mitchell or St George. Jarrah and Sienna were also crossed out by Boral when I got there as they are also not available. There are 19 bricks to choose from. If we go with t...

Did you end up upgrading the bricks? I was just speaking to someone in my street who built with them too and he said there wasn't much of a range so he paid an extra $5K for something a little better.
