Building A New House

I'm really sorry to hear that you are having the same experience that we had about eight years ago, or should I say, eight to ten and a half years ago. Yep, 2.5 years to build a one story house with the same company. Our list of frustrations was about as long, but the good news is that when we final...

I've lived in many houses, too many really, but have always managed a chair in my room to escape to. It's a great help to your parenting, somewhere to calm down when it all gets too much. My husband recently bought me a great chair for our next ( last?) house. you've inspired me to go the whole hog ...

In relation to the toxin issue I've been told that it's a good idea to have broad leaf plants, especially in new houses, as they absorb some of the toxins. This appears to make sense but perhaps someone with more expert knowledge could confirm whether this would make much difference.

I like the first one, it's more subtle but tones in nicely and is unlikely to show up minor marks

I'm no expert but I think it will look nice and fresh. I've done it before and thought it looked lovely.that was blinds though, not shutters.

I believe the trick is to start with what you do have and work from there. What colours do you have elsewhere in the house and outside? The other thing to think about is how easily the floor tiles will show dirt,as living area tiles will have a lot of traffic.

We've had tiles previously which were probably lower quality than most. The up side is that they didn't scratch despite several children and a dog. The down side was that the grouting is very hard to keep clean. I regularly cleaned the floor with bicarbonate soda and vinegar which was time consuming...

Is that a dog in the picture? I guess the dog would like something cooler to lie on than just pavers. I'm planning for a similar sized space so am interested in what you come up with. I'm thinking of going halfway between pavers and grass by having some ground cover around pavers or stepping stones,...

If you are planning to get a puppy I'd suggest adding somewhere for the puppy to dig, perhaps a small sand pit. Plants in pots are more dog proof as long as you organise the watering and the pots are sturdy. We are planing to put a path down the middle of a similar area and alternate stones and mulc...

I'm no colour expert but do love the white schemes, except for the floor. Having lived in numerous houses due to my husband's profession, my abiding lesson is that white tiles on the floor never look good except for straight after cleaning. I think you will be grateful that you've gone with charcoal.

Maybe you could answer a question for me. We are renting a home with what looks like a white stone benchtop. Apparently it's brand new. We are also building, and when choosing our benchtop was assured that they are stain resistant and coffee, for example will just sit on the surface rather than pene...

Re: How much should we prune our lemon tree

A couple of years ago my Dad decided to give our very old lemon tree the pruning of its life. We had just moved in and it appeared to have been left alone for years, and it took a while to recover. After a few months though, it became a prolific producer and the quality of fruit was much improved.

Yes we did, and Stirling insist on a 6 m average set back, which means the back yard is not big but we've manged to make a decent side yard, and by putting the clothesline along the narrow side and the alfresco at the back, all the side yard will be usable, especially for our dog who rules the yard....

How do you think Jarrah will wear over time with a water based finish. Being a darker timber will it be less prone to changing colour?

You have probably sorted this by now, as you posted a few months ago, but we are also building a two story home for a family of six in Stirling. We looked at 101, Ben Trager and Ultimate, and settled on the Ascot through Ultimate Homes with modifications. One was to add French Doors to a lounge room...
