Make sure Pea Mulch is not used in summer without being covered with a rough course mulch. Straws (of all types) do not in anyway meet any standards for conserving water (regardless of what perceptions people have that it does). In winter this is not such a problem with high rainfall and low evap ra...

Use Grevillea olivacaea. The king of fast growing hedges. Best bought as tube stock and also that's the cheapest way to get them.

For gods sake, never ever plant a Robinia. Geeze, if you like the look and don't want to plant anything else, I'll come round yours dressed as one and stand in the yard if that's what it takes to have one less of these bloody trees planted.

Tree blackberry and woody weed killer. Add seasol to it, some dishwashing liquid (a few drops) and spray in the morning, not before rain. It's going to take heaps of goes. Other ideas are voodoo, fire, nuclear weapons

I'd avoid the ryes. Way too much for water. Anyway when ElNino returns, you'll be left crying about the dead grass. Lawn alternatives would be a better suggestion. lawn camomile, Dichondra, Dodonaea ceratocarpa, Hemiandra pungens, Casurina Cousin It,

Really hard to get in WA. WA growers (there's only two here with the licence to grow it from the best I know) aren't growing it like years ago. A really good plant but it is one of the plants that's had Myrtaceae rust appear. WA is free of it. The plants though have to be brought into WA and its get...

That's insane! Have a go! Never grown it but how cool is the idea. :) It's easy to grow your own rice. A bath tub from the tip is a great start. A base of zeolite as a growing medium or expended clay. (zeolite is way better) and away you go. Erecting a shade structure with white light shade cloth of...

It will mean you never use mainstream gardening methods. So that means, no citrus fertilisers and rubbish like that. Go totally organic. Soil prep will require zeolite, perlite 10-20% organic material and around 5kg of sand a m2 (in clay soils) or 5kg of clay a m2 (in sandy soils). The use of compos...

It is absolute insanity to plant these and IMO down right irresponsible. It puts a great deal of stress and aguish on other people who wish not to be a part of the lanscape concept of a home 4 doors down the road. They won't sucker in just your garden. It will be the gardens of every one surrounding...

Oh, don't be shy on taking the concept further by using up the verge area with low plantings and ground covers.

the use of newspaper just doesn't sit well with me. It will channel water along the surface under the mulch away from the root zone. Not a method I'd advise to do. Not saying things wont work, just that they become far less efficient and retards successes perceived. On another note the garden looks ...

Instead of using a standard 9l watering can with say a cupful of molasses at the bottom diluted, would it be possible to reuse a 2l Seasol hose on pack, then attach the hose and spray over the garden much like you do for seasol. Might be easier for those with larger areas to cover. If so, what sort...
Read through the thread. Yes it can be done and is explained with pictures (from memory)

I say that from experience in growing them on a large scale. One of the single most pest prone plants in the horticultural industry. The chances of needing to use pesticides on them is fairly predictable for those growing them to sell to retail outlets and landscapers.

I trust they dug them deep so there was in excess of 300mm from the top of the soak well to the surface or best to height of house slab? Plenty of peeps out there with a smile and a shovel, that will drop a soak well in quick and shallow. Nice to hear of someone doing it well... Soak well.

Guys, be aware, as popular as the Rhoeos are, they are an extremely toxic plant. If you have little kids, best avoid these. Cascade Lily Pillys can look pretty impressive. One of the few I'd ever use. Great splash of colour in cooler months :)

What can't you :) Most of what you buy in a garden centre has been grown from cuttings. That which has not has been done in a lab as tissue cultures by plant breeders from plants that can normally be done by cuttings. Cuttings are most commonly made with soft wood, semi hard wood or hard wood depend...

They make a fantastic hedge. I recall being involved in a landscape that years later was featured in WA's habitat liftout in the Weekend West Newspaper. To see the Dodonea's established and cared for as we suggested, exceeded our expectations. Regular clipping, they'll get better and better. Soon th...
