I think it depends on the age of the house. Most older homes would have the toilet in the bathroom. I don't mind it . My pet hate is toilets off the laundry, don't know why!

We are getting to the end of our new home build. Anyone advise what goes in first - carpets or engineered timber? Carpet people are saying they install after timber flooring and timber flooring people are saying carpets go in first!

I am sure you will love it! I have had mine for 3 years and couldn't live without it. I don't think it is expensive for the quality and the amount of use it gets. Too many favourite recipes to list! Lots of resources on the internet and Facebook pages etc. Quirky Cooking is a good one for those with...

To answer the original question I reckon price seems ok. We have just paid $850 for a standard single entrance door (820x2040), installed pre painted rather than stained. So to get all the sidelights in stain grade timber etc sounds ok.

Just saw an advert in the West Australian for Smartstrand - looks like it is available in the O'Connor & Cannington stores. I'll be going to have a look as it sounds a great carpet. Not too sure about the issues mentioned a few posts back by tumble who is a carpet cleaner though :(

The Samsung one is 924l. It is the one I am planning to get as the freezer section has doors rather than a big drawer so I think things will be more accessible. The model no is SRF924DLS and I saw it at Harvey Norman - I think it was around $4k.

Actually I sympathise to an extent. We are building a fairly expensive custom home and still struggle to get regular updates. Lets be honest - we are all making one of the biggest investments of our lives, paying a lot of money- usually everyone building is paying as much as they can possibly afford...

I think it is standard practice for the customer to pay the electricity. Our bills haven't been much do far - about $25 every two months.

I think it depends on if there is any salvageable material in the house - like timber windows, floorboards etc. We were $18k to demolish a single storey Californian bungalow including removing a fibreglass pool.

I think ugbug's layout would work well. I don't like the door swinging right towards the toilet in the original. If you can't have a sliding door you could have one of those concertina type things that are two narrow panels hinged in the middle - must be a name for it but can't think right now! Fold...

We got ours increased as the original amount wouldn't have even covered a basic weekly rent. However you may be right saying it may be a moot point as I would imagine most builders would claim all sorts of delays to avoid paying.

Sounds like you should consider if you are overcapitalising for the street? Or do you think that in a few years more houses may be upgraded. Everyone has different opinions of streetscape - personally I hate it when people build a modern house in a street of more traditional homes. But in the end it...

Sounds a bit harsh - our builder told us they only charge a fee after construction commences. We have already made a couple of minor changes with no extra cost.

Totally agree with other saying look at overall price not individual items - otherwise you start feeling really ripped off!! Also take into account whether you are prepared to deal with the hassle of individual contractors post handover. It takes a lot of time and energy to get quotes and manage the...

Sadly I think what you are up against is not uncommon - as soon as you try to customise things with a project builder costs escalate dramatically. They make their money on volume and if things are non standard it costs them time to get quotes etc whereas using their standard items is quick and easy ...
