I am not going to be building until 2018, but already doing research to ensure I know what I'm getting into. My chosen area is Apple Tree Creek in the Bundaberg/Childers area. Does anyone know much about snakes in this area? I am planning to build on slab -- I have a broken femur (even after the ope...

Thanks! I certainly do intend to meet the neighbours before starting the build and will probably have a long list of questions. Will have to bring cake or something to compensate. The guineafowl thing is really interesting. I hadn't thought of adding a chook pen, but will certainly consider these gu...

A friend lives in a hebel home. He says the insulation quality is far superior to any other home he's ever lived in.

I have a found a home design that really suits my needs. However, some of the lock-up stage materials are from a particular company I'd rather not give money to due to its past treatment of asbestos victims. Am I able to say I want to use other products, or do they lock you into using what they want...

You are the customer and have the right to ask for anything when building a house. The larger builders will generally be less flexible as they are more structured in their approach. Slim margins means they need to keep tight control of their suppliers and costs. To move outside that channel could m...

I don't know about Brisbane, but I found a fabulous company in Melbourne. It does custom outdoor garden screens, but the looks and site info on materials generally suggest they can be adapted for indoors. Take a look on Google (including an image search). You could find something similar in Bris.

I'm so glad I read this thread. I was considering bamboo, but now think I will go for tiles. I didn't realise you can't steam mop bamboo. I will be outside of a regional city, so getting warps, etc, fixed could become a problem. The shoes-inside thing has not been a problem for us as we don't do it;...

Crepe Myrtle bloom in summer and crabapple and weeping cherry in the spring. Camellias can also grow large and different types flower and varying times throughout the year. Thank you so much for the suggestions! I hadn't even considered crabapples, but they're so lovely...

I'm building in 2018. I want to plant advanced trees in the front yard which is why I'm posting now, so I can order them from tree growers. I've been trying to find trees which flower in each season, as I'd like to have at least one in bloom all year round. However, I've had no luck finding a site w...

It has occurred to me when doing my design research that grab bars in bathrooms are incredibly ugly. If a bath or shower niche could have something decent on the bottom section that didn't resemble a hospital grab bar it would be perfect. I am lucky to have towel rails where I need them in my rental...

I was skulking around on Whirlpool when I got directed here. I'm planning to build in 2018 but having a darn good time of researching in the interim. I tried to buy a house when I was in my 20s and got ripped off to the tune of 30 grand by a "broker" (brokers were a bit newish in those day...

I like the simplicity of the layout, Helen. I have an even simpler one in mind for my place :-) But the windows on the front? They look so small and lonely. I was wondering why so many new homes have "media" rooms these days. I suppose it's because people don't want their TVs to be altars ...

Absolutely love your kitchen cooktop and ovens. Personally, I am terrified of gas (lived in a rental which had a leak), but I want a really, really large cooktop in my house. I love cooking and my kitchen and pantry are going to be my big spending areas.

Ours is a decent size so I doubt you'd encounter what you've described...it's 1780mm long so your hips won't really be near the tap ware and if they place the tap at a good height I don't think you'd need to worry too much...I'll let you know when I get to have my first bath! I love your bath, but may I ask you and others on this thread: are people concerned about having tap fittings centred? I ask because I have a broken femur (repaired with plate and pins) and would be worried about knocking my hip on it when getting up. I will be putting my fittings at one end of the ...
