@chippy thanks for the advice - really appreciate it. I think you're right that a neat cover will work for now, and I can fix it up properly once the renovations are done. Helped me avoid an absolute nightmare of a filler job!

@alexp79 ideally I'd replace the tiles (I've been able to paint match pretty well with some ceramic tile paint) and have the MDF / FC board sitting above them.
