I might add re waffle pod slabs - a mate - who we stay with - said he felt his slab (WP) handled the earthquake in his area better than normal slabs - which cracked. He claimed he felt a ripple across the house but no obvious cracks or problems. Can't back this up with any proof - it was just his o...
In all seriousness, I can attest to this. I live about 20km from the epicentre of the 5.4 quake that shook the Moe area...

Congratulations Nonna on a great and sympathetic build! I don't visit here often nowadays but I have always enjoyed your story and pics, and the retention of the original facade. Great job! :D

Urban Myth - believe it or not! Many people chuck in a dollar coin when the slab gets poured, for good luck. But if the coin ends up laying against the rio, the chemical reaction caused by the two dissimilar metals touching each other creates rust and concrete cancer ! It actually happened to my fri...

There was a recent news report where two evaporative units in Melbourne caught fire on the same day. Typically, the media were beating it up to say that the problem was inherent of evap units - but we all know that ANY unit can catch alight. This might seem strange that I am defending evap units for...

We get on well with our neighbours and they were around one night last summer for drinkies on our deck; it was a hot day and evening. He was amazed at how noisy his evaporative unit was from our side of the fence. He didn't quite apologise, and we don't go out of our way to take umbrage, but I wond...
Eager, do your neighbours ever get their unit serviced? Either it's a cheap and nasty one, or it needs something fixed,...

Evap coolers are rubbish and here are the main reasons why (PS I have one and I hate it): 5. They're noisy. To get high air flow your fan is running fast and it's noisy. No, the cracking never got any worse so we didn't bother making an issue about it.

ETA: we are building on a 1000m2 block and the footprint only covers 33% of the land so I doubt it would fall into the McMansion category ie. small block/large house Yes. It is important to remember that if everyone had the chance to build a house on the quintessential 1/4 acre, a house of that siz...

We have our solar panel on the west roof face. So do a lot of people in our estate. We prefer this location as it leaves a huge roof space available for future electrical solar panels. That is a very good point. We got solar PV panels installed this year and were hampered by the location of our sol...

The very common 4-horizontal pane door here, painted in Deep Ocean, a Colorbond colour to match the gutters and fascia. Apologies for the poor photo! This was just after we moved in almost 4 years ago and everything looks a bit different now because the landscaping is done and the render colour has ...

I hope your right Casa2, our house insurance went up $200.00 nothing to do with the tax. I managed to talk it back down $120.00 as we have had insurance with them forever. That's a very good point and almost worthy of it's own thread (coming soon...). What you pay for insurance is actually negotiab...

Very little of the build will be affected by the carbon tax. Steel is, but I don't think there is much more. Pretty much every component needs to be transported, though? The tax will not be applied to fuel. A big problem is that not everyone knows everything about the ins-and-outs of the tax. I cer...

Any person or representative from any business that is trying to justify a price increase due to the Carbon Tax should be dobbed in to the ACCC. Personally, I'd like to see them hung, drawn and quartered. Think about this - how could any business proprieter, large or small, accurately predict that t...
