I've removed some of the cornice and can see at the top of the brick wall where a half-brick has been laid to meet the steel beams. So to me it looks like the internal brick wall was added after the upper floor was constructed and shouldn't be a supporting wall.

I've asked several builders but they haven't been able to help. As the home was built in the 80's it might be a bit far back for some. I don't know; don't know who to ask now.
